UFO sightings - Amazing cylinder-shaped daytime footage was recorded in the sky over Toronto, Canada in early May 2010. This footage is a little too good to be true, so it's probably computer-generated imagery. What do you think?

MONTREAL — Stephen Hawking's warnings of an alien invasion have prompted a vigorous defence of extraterrestrials by their most prominent Canadian fan.

Former federal defence minister Paul Hellyer, 86, believes not only that aliens have visited Earth but also that they have contributed greatly to human technological advances.

So he can't quite understand why the world renowned astrophysicist views them with such trepidation; Hawking recently warned that malevolent aliens could lead to the destruction of humanity.

The longtime cabinet minister accuses Hawking of spreading misinformation about extraterrestrials.

"I think he's indulging in some pretty scary talk there that I would have hoped would not come from someone with such an established stature," Hellyer said in an interview.

"I think it's really sad that a scientist of his repute would contribute to what I would consider more misinformation about a vast and very important subject."

Hawking speculates in a new documentary that most extraterrestrial life will be similar to microbes, or small animals -- but he adds that advanced life forms may be "nomads, looking to conquer and colonize" new planets.

Hellyer served in the Liberal cabinets of Louis St. Laurent, Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau, later crossed the floor to the Conservative party, and eventually returned to the Liberals.

Hellyer, who ran for the Liberal party leadership in 1968, has been speaking out publicly about "the star visitors" for years. His most recent speech was in Washington in April 2009.

He dismisses a suggestion that some people might find his views a little hard to believe.

"The reality is that they've (aliens) been visiting Earth for decades and probably millennia and have contributed considerably to our knowledge," Hellyer said.

He says earthlings owe a lot to their alien friends. Even that computer screen on your desk, he says, can trace its origins to spaceships.

"Microchips, for example, fiber-optics, they are just two of the many things that allegedly -- and probably for real -- came from crashed vehicles," Hellyer said.

Hellyer admits that when he was defence minister, he never got any briefings on UFOs from the military. He says he got reports of sightings, and that some of them could not be explained.

His interest in aliens goes back at least as far as 1967, Canada's centennial year.

That's the year Hellyer went to St. Paul, Alta., to officially inaugurate the world's first flying saucer landing pad which was built by the locals to celebrate the centennial.

The town continues to get about 5,000 visitors a year, with more than half making a pilgrimage to the landing pad.

Liberal Senator Colin Kenny was approached by Hellyer in late 2005 and asked to hold public hearings on Canadian exopolitics. That's the politics of how to deal with extraterrestrial contact.

Kenny, who chaired the Senate defence committee, remembers the meeting well.

"I liked Paul, I worked for him in the leadership race in 1968, and when he called me up to see me I was pleased to see him and we reminisced for a while," Kenny recalls.

"Then, wow! Out of the blue, he starts talking about extraterrestrials and how they're everywhere and they have these immense powers."

Kenny says his opinion about aliens hasn't changed since that meeting five years ago: "I think it's for the birds."

"I'm certainly not going to waste any of my time on the extraterrestrial business," Kenny said.

A past president of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada agrees there might be UFOs out there, but he's a little more hesitant about aliens. He takes Hawking's warning with a grain of salt.

"I think it's an opinion more than anything," Randy Attwood said.

"I think he may be throwing the ball out into the field, just to try to get people to actually start talking about this."

Attwood says data gathered during the exploration of Mars by unmanned spacecraft give some credence to Hawking, who is an honorary member of the astronomical society.

"All things are pointing now to life on Mars in the past, possibly when its orbit was different," he said. "It had an atmosphere, it was warmer, there was running water."

"So it's quite possible that life was in fact there -- not Martian wilder beasts or anything like that -- but multiple-cell organisms."

Attwood says given that one of Earth's closest neighbours potentially had life, it's quite possible that life, in fact, exists elsewhere in the universe.

"Whether it's single-celled or multiple-cell, or beings that are actually travelling through space, we don't know," he said.

I need to be taken seriously right now I am not crazy or a lier just because people did not see it does not mean it did not happen..

It was May 3 2008 im pretty sure. It was about 2:00 in the morning I was at my fiances moms farm near Kisbey in south east Saskatchewan. Iwas out late with a buddy sitting on the deck it was a nice warm clear night a good night to just sit back and look at the stars while we talked about our alien theories and what not..Anyways at around 2:00 we noticed a set of lights out in the feild behind the house they were about 600 700 yards away and very low to the ground from what we could see. We stared at them for about 10 mins trying to figure out what they were they appeared to be moving in a circular motion and flashing in a pattern from left to right. We decided to get a better view so we walked up to a near by hill and crouched down but when we did all other lights around faded out of sight except for the rotating lights, At first we thought it was a semi on a dirt road but It just sat there and was far to long to be a semi at such a far distance. So we decided to walk back to the house as we got back onto the deck we saw a bright falsh of light shoot off into the sky the light looked like it came from the object in the field, The light looked kinda like a flar but it was in the shape of what looked like Pac-Man it only lasted a few seconds and then faded and at about that time we started to hear twigs snapping in the trees all around the house and what sounded like light foot steps in the tall grass we went inside and grabbed a flashlight, when we got outside we walked close to the treeline looking for whatever was in the bushes and then out of nowhere our flashlight died but we kept going I didn't want to but I didn't want to seem like a baby in front of my buddy anyways every time we got close to the tree line we would hear a sound on the opposite side of us when we went towards the sound it would move to another part of the tree line almost like there was multiple creatures in the bush and they would make noise anytime we got close to one so that we couldn't see it. we did this for about a half hour by the time we got back to the deck it was almost 3:30am we were already scared. My buddy came up with a little test to see if we were alone he is very smart and clever in his mind but what he would do is yell out "If you can understand me snap a twig" and sure enough we heard a loud snap come from the trees I jumped and said a few bad words. Then we decided to try another test we went to one side of the yard and ran to the other side as we did we heard something crash through the bushes toward us as if it was eagar to follow us but it stayed in the bushes We were so scared that in mid run we turned on a dime and ran towards the house in fear we went back on to the deck and sat for a min to catch our breath and analize in our heads what we just heard after a few mins we decided to walk down the ramp behind the house that led around the house to the driveway as we got to the corner of the house we saw something standing in the driveway we could not see its face but it just stood there. We stared at it for about 30 seconds or so when we heard a low whine noise come from behind us we turned to look but found nothing when we looked back to see the creature standing in the driveway it was gone. (the creature was about 6 foot 3 or so it had long arms and a round head but had no clothing from what we could see.)anyways as I was saying I was scared I really wanted to go inside so we decided to go inside. We walked towards the house we had our backs toward the house staring at the driveway when out of nowhere we heard what sounded like a loud gust of wind that slammed a bush near the front door right up against the house and it was loud I did a full 360 jump when we looked at the bush it was pretty much pressed up against the house I was shaking so bad I had to sit down. When I was on the ground my buddy was in front of me talking to me as I looked up at him I saw a large black shadow on the roof looking down at us as I told him to look it darted away it was really fast, I got up and we ran to the back of the house to see what it was but there was nothing at about that time we noticed a large object in the shape of a triangle move across the sky above the house it had 3 lights on it one on each corner but there was no sound we could feel a slight vibration on the ground but yet no sound, It moved very slow about 10 miles an hour then all of a sudden a bright light laminated the yard and it sped of heading south at an incredible speed then it was gone. A strong sulphur smell filled the air In total shock we went inside and down to my buddy room so that we could regroup and get our minds straight so we could figure out what just happened we did not sleep for the rest of the night we were to scared. About 3 nights later my buddy woke up gasping for air and it was loud enough to wake me and I was in another room I went to see if he was okay he said he could not remember his dream but it felt like something was pressing really hard on his chest and then once again the strong sulphur smell filled the room but only for about 2 mins. After that for about 3 weeks we had weird dreams consisting smelled sulphur and seen weird lights in the sky almost every night.. I had one dream that was exactly the same for 2 nights in a row I dreamed that I was abducted and taken to a strange place where I was stuck with a needle like object in the corner of my eye I could not speak, scream, or move then everything would go black and Id wake up. When I would wake up it would be morning but it felt like I only slept for a few mins.

To this day we still see strange lights in the sky others have witnessed it as well but I will never forget that night ever It was the most frightening thing I have ever gone through....

The apocalyptic movie "2012" wasn't good enough for the Oscars to take seriously. But a small cast of celebrities are taking the hit film's premise seriously: that 2012 could be the end of the world as we know it.

Stars who have ruminated publicly about 2012 being The End include Woody Harrelson, Lil' Wayne, Joe Rogan, Montel Williams and the grande dame of New Age spirituality, Shirley MacLaine.

You can add Dan Aykroyd to that list.

Aykroyd and I were catching up the other day because he's in Vegas to autograph bottles of his Crystal Head Vodka at an Albertsons (4 p.m. Tuesday, 10250 W. Charleston Blvd.).

And he's giving Wednesday's keynote address at the Nightclub & Bar Convention at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Because Aykroyd is a pop-renaissance man, I started by asking him about his many interests: The House of Blues (he and his partners sold it in 2006, but he's still spokesman-consultant); Crystal Head Vodka, which he co-created (no chemical additives); and "Ghostbusters III" (the script's closer to being done).

Then I asked Aykroyd, 57, about his interests in UFOs, which led to this:

He thinks "the UFO phenomenon is going to figure greatly" in a 2012 "revelation," when "the end of the world will come."

"It won't be the end of the world physically as we know it, as depicted in the movie. But it will be the end of consciousness and the end of perception as we know it."

Aykroyd is a "great admirer of George Knapp," who has chronicled UFO phenomena for decades in Nevada.

And Aykroyd, a lifetime benefactor of MUFON.com, has visited the town of Rachel on Extraterrestrial Highway and marveled at "real photographs" there of sightings.

"These aren't hoaxes or fakes," he said. "Dozens of Army officers, police, sheriffs, emergency workers -- people who are outside all day, all night, all the time -- are consistently coming forward to report events."

UFO phenomena could be elements in a 2012 realignment, perhaps as mass revelations or mass sightings, he said.

"Mass telepathic content has already occurred throughout North America on many occasions, the last notable one being in 1994 in (Quebec), where there was an incident that involved about 2,000 people being called to their back porches to look up into the sky and witness an event with a craft at the same time. That was a telepathic event where they were all contacted."

Clearly, some kind of end is near, he said.

"As Shirley MacLaine puts it: The light is going to go out in the next few years, 2012, and a new perception will come on.

"Whether that has to do with the dominance of dark matter in the universe -- or some triumph/domination of good and evil -- the light we know now, whether that's a good light or a bad light, is going to change.

"There's going to be a phase-wave shift in everything, and that's very exciting. I don't think it's destructive. I think it's going to be very constructive."

I asked him how we should prepare.

"I think we should open our minds and start being better human beings to each other, and accept that this may be the way of life. We've got to be more compassionate, more loving, more positive thinking."

A worst-case scenario is that "the good light" will go out and we will experience "the bad light." If that happens, people who practice on behalf of the good light will be even more pressed to "fight" against "whatever darkness is coming," he said.

I asked him, "Fight how?"

"Fight like hell!" he said. "Fight like hell on the side of the road."

I asked him how Nevada will fit into all this.

He answered by unfurling an incredibly deep knowledge of Vegas and Nevada. He reflected on the UFO culture of Rachel; the state's military; Nevada's "beautiful topography"; Mayor Oscar Goodman's adeptness at handling issues; the strength of "first families" and entrepreneurs in Nevada, such as the Maloofs; the positive ways Vegas embraces performance artists; our liberal attitudes toward leisure; UNLV's educational culture; and the big brains of math doctorates who work for multidynamic hotels.

Many of those strengths mean Vegas could take in refugees in 2012, he said.

"There's no city on Earth that handles more people more efficiently," he said.

"If you had to create an exodus of 100,000 people, where they had to flee from their native land, they could be put up in Las Vegas with no problem," he said.

He added, "We don't want to wish that" kind of refugee-causing catastrophe.

Floored by all this information, I thanked Aykroyd for sharing his thoughts, and I asked whether there's anything else he wants me to tell you.

"We're doing a signing at Albertsons next Tuesday," he said.

Definitive proof: Clearest UFO ever filmed in China

What is being hailed as the clearest ever UFO footage (view below) and final and definitive proof of alien visitation to planet earth has been filmed in China in the last fortnight.

ON January 28 at 8.40am multiple witnesses saw a giant pyramid shaped UFO briefly hover above the city of Xi'an.

The UFO was seen for no more than two minutes and one witness, Mr Yu managed to film around 15 seconds of footage of this historic event.

Mr Yu described the UFO as being covered in uneven patterns and shapes as well as having glowing purple light coming out of its underside. Another smaller UFO was seen at one stage move in the vicinity of the larger craft.

Both UFOs were seen by more than one witness despite their brief appearance.

'This is astonishing, landmark footage' one Chinese ufologist noted.

it is generally agreed that this footage is not computer generated and the event occurred although some are claiming the object was a giant kite that briefly appeared from behind fog.

Most viewers doubt that explanation and see this footage as definitive proof that a civilization that travels between worlds using pyramid shaped craft are about to make open contact with humanity.

I received a very unusual email on February 5, 2010 from UFO Digest reader Grant. Usually I get submissions showing an object that the individual believes possibly could be a UFO (unidentified flying object).

Most of these photos and videos show airplanes, balloons, birds etc. and some do seem to contain an unknown object or objects.

Grant was in Toronto and was visiting one the cities major tourist attractions: the CN Tower. From there, he took a series of photos and was facing West.

Grant brackets his photos. He wrote, "I am frustrated with how slowly my digital camera takes pictures so I had it set on the setting that takes 3 shots very quickly and then I just pick the best one and delete the rest." I have a similar digital camera that can take three photos in a row, almost instantly.

Grant’s set of photos do not show any aircraft or object whatsoever!

To be fair the sky looks overcast and some vehicle or object could be hovering out of sight hidden by cloud layer. But this is speculation but is possible.

The first of the series of three photographs show a beam of light that seemingly originates out of thin air. The second photo appears to show that the shaft of light had expanded and was now touching the ground.

The actual beam lights up an area of western Toronto that I would definitely describe as industrial.

The third photo shows nothing unusual, nothing extraordinary: everything had returned to normal.

If you know what the genesis of this beam of light is or have additional information please contact me by email.

This report and the accompanying photos seem to suspend believe. It is almost as if one was watching an episode of "Fringe" which coincidentally is shot in Toronto. We will follow-up on this story.

Was outside in the evening around 9:00pm on febuary 20th 2009 and had a 10 000 000 000 lumen spotlight in my hand and was waving it into the sky and switchin it on and off for no apparent reason.And on the Eastern side of the sky where I was waving the light an object which first resembled a shooting star came into view then it dissapeared and reappeared right above me and stopped;I then knew it was a ufo because I never seen anything so Orange in my life.started to pulsate a bright Orange and slowly moved along the land line and then it just turned itself off.I tried to get it to turn itself back on by waving the light back on and off,and nothing so I turned the light off.Then I yelled into te Air "you not kidnapping me you evil reptile Bastards".And to my amazment I felt as if It really heard me.Then while I was heading back into the house the object reappeared for a second and moved at the same speed it came into view then dissapeared.It went over the tree lines at incredible speed and I lost sight of it.
Afterwards I felt as If I was being monitored or as if someone was in the room with me for the remainder of that night.But I started reading the bible and prayed.And nothing happen out of the ordinary after that.

In the Month of September in 1990,I am home with my 2 children,ages 4 and 15.Was cooking a pizza in the oven around 7:00pm that night,I went outside to have a cigarette and tea.I noticed lights in the back of our woods,that were bright and circular,and were moving around very slow.Zig Zaging maneuvers.I became scared and yelled through the backdoor for my Daughter to get the baby.The power flickered on and off and then went completely off.My Daughter arrived with the child wrapped in a blanket and handed him to me.The power is still off and we are standing at the back step.And that moment a larger craft appears on the edge of our land line.I told my Daughter to take the child and hide upstairs.The smaller white balls changed colors from white to yellow as I was watching and it met the larger craft.(The Larger Craft was gigantic,and resembled a huge saucer with yellow lights)Then I got angry with what I was seeing and I went into the woods to Challenge what I was seeing,and I lost all of my memory after this,And I'm am having a hard time discerning the truth from the actual event.To my knowledge is the truth.I vaguely remember the rest of the event but to my knowledge I was able to make it back to the house,I was very tired and I remember making a phone to the RCMP to come and investigate.And I remember now that my Head was in severe pain.I then went to check on the children and they were resting peacefully in my daughters bed.Then I moved the children to my room because I was scared and didn't know what was going on or what was happening.I rested with them until The RCMP arrived at around 9:30 pm that night.I gave them my report and they we're going to keep a surveillance on the house for the remainder of the night.Because I was so distraught from what I witnessed and experienced.The RCMP came with a camera and took pictures of the area where I made the sighting.The RCMP told me they believed my story so they did a perimeter check but did not enter the woods.They took pictures of the surrounding area but found nothing.Then tea and coffee we're offered to them and we conversed about the event.It seemed as though they believed me.While the RCMP were there the lights flickered on and off again.But the power was kept.And then they suggested an electrical problem.Then the RCMP returned to their vehicle,wrote up a report and left.At that moment I locked all doors and windows,took in the dog and cats and went to bed for the rest of the night.Which was around 10:30 pm that night.And That night was very quiet and nothing to my knowledge happened after that.And when I woke up and I was feeling strangely happy not knowing why.That is my story

The Prime Minister's Office wants residents in Harbour Mille, N.L., to know it was not a missile they saw in their evening sky.

But the PMO, or any government agency, can't or won't explain what flashed over the coast of the tiny, rural village Monday night, sparking growing curiosity in the town and beyond.

"There is no indication that there was ever a rocket launch," Prime Minister Steven Harper's press secretary Dimitri Soudas said in an email to QMI Agency.

On Monday night, Darlene Stewart spotted the object while she was outside in her yard and took a photo of it.

She told media outlets she hoped to blow up the image on her computer screen to see what it was, but even then she couldn't make out what it was exactly.

The image appears to be the shape of a rocket, leaving a trail behind it.

Neighbour Emmy Pardy told CTV that the item was "a humongous bullet, silver-grey in colour and it had flames coming out of the bottom and a trail of smoke."

Suspicions that it might have been a missile grow after reports that France launched a M51 from a submarine off its shores in the Atlantic as part of missile testing. An M51 has a range of 8,000 kilometres.

France and Newfoundland are 4,000 kilometres apart.

Since the sighting on Monday, there's been much talk in the small town by residents who have been speculating about what they saw in the night sky, debating anything from the missile theory to debris falling from the atmosphere, or maybe even an alien spacecraft.

Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte Liberal MP Gerry Byrne has said he wants answers from the federal government about what exactly they know about the incident.

Apollo 11.. UFO Sighting On The Moon

Apollo 11, with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin was the first Apollo flight to land on the Moon, on July 20, 1969. While Collins flew in orbit around the Moon in the command module, Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module, landing in the Sea of Tranquillity at 4:17 P.M.

According to hitherto un-confirmed reports, both Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin saw UFOs shortly after that historic landing on the Moon in Apollo 11 on 21 July 1969. I remember hearing one of the astronauts refer to a "light" in or on a crater during the television transmission, followed by a request from mission control for further information. Nothing more was heard.

The following astonishing conversation was picked up by ham radio operators that had their own VHF receiving facilities that bypassed NASA's broadcasting outlets. At this time, the live television broadcast was interrupted for two minutes due to a supposed "overheated camera", but the transmission below was received loud and clear by hundreds of ham radio operators.

According to Otto Binder, who was a member of the NASA space team, when the two moon-walkers, Aldrin and Armstrong were making their rounds some distance from the LEM, Armstrong clutched Aldrin's arm excitedly and exclaimed:

Armstrong: What was it? What the hell was it? That's all I want to know!"

Mission Control: What's there?... malfunction (garble) ... Mission Control calling Apollo 11...

Apollo 11: These babies were huge, sir!... Enormous!... Oh, God! You wouldn't believe it! ... I'm telling you there are other space-craft out there ... lined up on the far side of the crater edge! ... They're on the Moon watching us!

Wilson writes (p. 48):

"Binder ends his report with this observation: 'There has, understandably, been no confirmation of this incredible report by NASA or any authorities. WE cannot vouch for its authenticity, but if true, one can surmise that mission control went into a dither and then into a huddle, after which they sternly [ordered] the moonwalkers to 'forget' what they saw and carry on casually and calmly as if nothing had happened. After all, an estimated 600 million people around the world were hanging on every word spoken by the first two men to leave footprints on the Moon."

The book "Celestial Raise" by Richard Watson and ASSK [P.O. Box 35 Mt. Shasta CA. 96067 (916)-926-2316); 1987; page 147-148] records the following (continuation?) of the above remarkable dialogue of Apollo 11, which was picked up by hundreds of ham radio operators in the USA:

During the transmission of the Moon landing of Armstrong and Aldrin, who journeyed to the Moon in an American spaceship, two minutes of silence occurred in which the image and sound were interrupted. NASA insisted that this problem was the result of one of the television cameras which had overheated, thus interfering with the reception.

This unexpected problem surprised even the most qualified of viewers who were unable to explain how in such a costly project, one of the most essential elements could break down... Some time after the historic Moon landing, Christopher Craft, director of the base in Houston, made some surprising comments when he left NASA.

The contents of these comments, which is included in the conversations [below], has been corroborated by hundreds of amateur radio operators who had connected their stations to the same frequency through which the astronauts transmitted. During the two minute interruption - which was not as it seemed, NASA, Armstrong and Aldrin with Cape Kennedy, censored both image and sound. 'I say that there were other spaceships.'

Here is reproduced completely the dialogue between the American astronauts and Control Center:

Armstrong & Aldrin: Those are giant things. No, no, no - this is not an optical illusion. No one is going to believe this!

Houston (Christopher Craft): What ... what ... what? What the hell is happening? What's wrong with you?

Armstrong & Aldrin: They're here under the surface.

Houston: What's there? (muffled noise) Emission interrupted; interference control calling 'Apollo 11'.

Armstrong & Aldrin: We saw some visitors. They were here for a while, observing the instruments.

Houston: Repeat your last information!

Armstrong & Aldrin: I say that there were other spaceships. They're lined up in the other side of the crater!

Houston: Repeat, repeat!

Armstrong & Aldrin: Let us sound this orbita ... in 625 to 5 ... Automatic relay connected ... My hands are shaking so badly I can't do anything. Film it? God, if these damned cameras have picked up anything - what then?

Houston: Have you picked up anything?

Armstrong & Aldrin: I didn't have any film at hand. Three shots of the saucers or whatever they were that were ruining the film

Houston: Control, control here. Are you on your way? What is the uproar with the UFOs over?

Armstrong & Aldrin: They've landed here. There they are and they're watching us.

Houston: The mirrors, the mirrors - have you set them up?

Armstrong & Aldrin: Yes, they're in the right place. But whoever made those spaceships surely can come tomorrow and remove them. Over and out.

A certain professor, who wished to remain anonymous, was engaged in a discussion with Neil Armstrong during a NASA symposium.

Professor: What REALLY happened out there with Apollo 11?

Armstrong: It was incredible, of course we had always known there was a possibility - the fact is, we were warned off! There was never any question then of a space station or a moon city.

Professor: How do you mean "warned off"?

Armstrong: I can't go into details, except to say that their ships were far superior to ours both in size and technology - Boy, were they big!...and menacing! No, there is no question of a space station.

Professor: But NASA had other missions after Apollo 11?

Armstrong: Naturally - NASA was committed at that time, and couldn't risk panic on Earth. But it really was a quick scoop and back again.

According to a Dr. Vladimir Azhazha:

"Neil Armstrong relayed the message to Mission Control that two large, mysterious objects were watching them after having landed near the Moon module (LEM). But this message was never heard by the public - because NASA censored it."

According to a Dr. Aleksandr Kasantsev, Buzz Aldrin took color movie film of the UFOs from inside the module, and continued filming them after he and Armstrong went outside.

Armstrong confirmed that the story was true but refused to go into further detail, beyond admitting that the CIA was behind the cover-up.

People who saw a missile-like object soaring through the sky over a small rural community in Newfoundland Monday night are getting no answers about what it was, although police say they'd gotten to the bottom of the mystery.

Darlene Stewart spotted the object while taking pictures of the sunset over Harbour Mille, a community of about 200 residents on the south coast of the province. She says she started snapping photos.

She then called her neighbour, Emmy Pardy, and the two women, along with Stewart's husband, say they saw three similar objects flying through the air minutes apart, one up close and two farther off in the distance.

"I really did get sick to my stomach, I was shaking when I seen it," Stewart told CBC News Wednesday. "We were just in awe of what we seen."

The photos taken by Stewart show blurry pictures of what appears to be a long, round object, much like a missile, seemingly rising from the ocean, with either smoke or flames shooting out the back end.
Objects made no noise

Stewart said the objects didn't make any noise.

"We confirmed that it was something," Sgt. Wayne Edgecombe told CBC News Wednesday. But Edgecombe said he couldn't reveal what the police investigation uncovered.

He said the focus of any police investigation is on whether something criminal has occurred.

"It's nothing criminal," he said, in relation to the unidentified object.

Edgecombe said he contacted the Department of National Defence and "they gave me some info," but he said that it is up to that department to release the information publicly.

Defence department officials were refusing comment.

The sighting has intrigued people in the Harbour Mille area, with some saying they were told by officers who were in the community Tuesday investigating the sightings, that the objects were test missiles launched from the nearby French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Edgecombe said that rumour is completely false.

The suggestion that the object possibly involved the military has Liberal MP Gerry Byrne, who represents the Newfoundland riding of Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, demanding answers.

"There's a credible body of evidence," Byrne told CBC News, "that suggests there's something spectacular happened off of our shore. Before this goes any farther, I think the government needs to actually respond very quickly with a straightforward, factual statement."
Was safety in jeopardy?

Byrne said if it was some kind of military test, then people should be told whether their safety was jeopardized.

"If indeed this was a man-made object, that it was a missile, was there any potential risk to health and safety from collateral damage should the missile fire have failed?"

Byrne used the mystery to take a shot at the federal government for proroguing Parliament. He said if the House of Commons was opened, he'd be able to question the ministers of defence, transport and public safety about the incident.

"It's cloaked in relative secrecy," he said. "And the only way to get around that secrecy is a special institution called the floor of the House of Commons."

Stewart said Tuesday she has been overwhelmed by the number of calls she has received about the sighting. But she said nobody has told her officially what it was that she saw.

"I would like to get to the bottom of it," she said.

SECRET FILES: Stories in The Press from early January 1979 show that the air force had a Skyhawk readied to investigate UFO sightings following the mysterious lights which appeared over Kaikoura days before

Hundreds of pages of secret files on New Zealand UFO sightings will be released by the military this year.

The files include reports of UFO sightings from 1979 to 1984 and references to the Kaikoura sighting of December 1978.

The files are held by Archives New Zealand and were to have been made public this month, but the Defence Force is removing personal information from them to comply with the Privacy Act.

"At the moment we are working on making copies of these files, minus the personal information," a Defence Force spokeswoman said. "Once this work is completed, we are hoping to be able to release a copy of all the UFO files, including some ahead of their release time, within the year."

Lights were seen in the sky over Kaikoura in December 1978 and were filmed by an Australian news crew. Aircraft tracked the lights, which were also seen on radar.

A man who worked for the Transport Ministry's civil aviation division when the Kaikoura lights were seen said he would like to see the government files.

The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was working at Christchurch International Airport at the time. He saw United States Air Force planes with unusual call signs touring the area and believes the full story about the lights has not been disclosed.

"For the US Air Force to come all that way and spend three days here, there must have been something going on," he said.

The Press sought any Defence Force files on UFO sightings under the Official Information Act in August last year.

The Defence Force said the request "would require a substantial amount of collation, research and consultation to identify whether any of that information could be released" and it was "not in a position to deploy staff to undertake that task".

It said public files on UFO sightings were available from Archives New Zealand.

The Press requested access to those files from Archives New Zealand, but was not able to see them as they had been borrowed by the Defence Force.

The director of research group UFOCUS NZ, Suzanne Hansen, said she was frustrated by the delayed release but understood the privacy reasons.

"We have been in discussion with the New Zealand Defence Force for many years ... It is frustrating from a research perspective because we would like to collate these sightings with international research."

She said some sightings could have been alien technology. "There are cases that are certainly not our technology. It has been scientifically proven that this is entirely possible."

New Zealand Skeptics chairwoman Vicki Hyde said the secret files would not be as interesting as they appeared. "Governments all around the world have these kind of files and they are not as exciting as you might possibly hope.

"The Government is required to log these things and it can give a false impression that there is a vast amount of activity out there.

"There is probably intelligent life elsewhere, but whether it has come here to play silly buggers with us in a game of cosmic hide and seek is another matter.

"It is a big jump from `there was something in the sky and I don't know what it was' to `that was a craft piloted by aliens'."

She said most sightings could be of mundane things such as satellites and flocks of birds.

SAN FRANCISCO — In the movie version of stopping an asteroid from hitting Earth popularized by Armageddon, a few brave Americans quickly head out to the near-Earth object and blow it up.

The reality will be far less dramatic, former astronaut Rusty Schweickart told scientists at the American Geophysical Union meeting here Wednesday. Asteroid-deflection efforts will have to start years before a prospective impact and will have to be essentially international.

“Whether or not the international community, within or outside the United Nations, can rise to the demands of such a challenge in advance of an impact … is problematic,” Schweickart summarized.

Two general strategies for deflecting asteroids are currently on the table. The first is some type of impactor or blast, possibly nuclear, that would knock the asteroid off the collision course. The second is a longer-term “shepherding” operation that would slowly morph the asteroid’s trajectory in space so that it misses Earth. Both schemes would have major international implications.

Nuclear weapons have been explicitly outlawed in space since the Partial Test Ban Treaty was negotiated in 1963. Sending a nuclear weapon into space to hit an asteroid would require modifying the treaty, which could have unforeseen negative repercussions.

“Many of us have expressed our concern about nuclear effects because of political options,” said David Morrison, an astronomer at NASA Ames Research Center who organized a session at the AGU meeting about near-Earth objects.

Schweickart’s group, The B612 Foundation, has advocated a different approach to asteroid deflection, but one that will require an equally difficult international negotiation. They propose to bump or tow an asteroid “in a controlled manner” so that it misses Earth. The only problem is that such a process would take time and as the asteroid’s trajectory changed, it would be “pointed” at different places along a horizontal plane on Earth called the risk corridor.

That’s a major geopolitical problem, Schweickart said, because it requires temporarily increasing the risk to one population — in the example above, Venezuela, or Russia — to eventually eliminate the risk for the entire Earth.

“It’s going to be slowly dragged across the Earth. That is a binary decision,” Schweickart said. “You don’t have the option of dragging it down through the Antarctic.”

Who gets to decide which way the asteroid is dragged away from an impact with Earth? The United Nations? The United States? Russia? Some independent body of astronomers and space agencies?

“What deflection technologies are OK and who says they are OK?” Schweickart asked. “Who accepts liability? How do you decide that it’s OK to endanger the people of Venezuela or the people of Kazakhstan?”

He called figuring such questions out a “geopolitical decision of the first order.” Earlier this year, the Association of Space Explorers presented a report to the U.N. Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space recommending that some international decision-making bodies be created to evaluate and respond to near-Earth object hazards.

The U.N. committee could bring some options before the General Assembly by 2012, although Schweickart has some doubts that people are politically prepared to deal with the tough decisions that humanity could face to deflect an asteroid.

“You’re going to have to make that decision when the probability is less than one, 10 or 20 years ahead of time,” he said. “That’s not easy for anyone, let alone the United Nations.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Any number of undiscovered near-Earth objects could one day careen into the Earth, and there is a lot of talk here at the American Geophysical Union meeting about tracking them. So far, though, only one discovered object has seemed even mildly likely to hit our planet.

That asteroid is Apophis, a 900-foot asteroid. Calculations released on Christmas Eve 2004 appeared to show that there was a greater than 2 percent chance the asteroid would hit the Earth in 2029. The asteroid appeared ready to give the Earth its closest shave since astronomers began looking for such things. It was judged a 4 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale for a short time, the highest rating any near-Earth object has received.

As it turned out, more precise observations brought the risk of collision down to just 1 in 250,000, but the scare sparked greater interest and study in the fields of asteroid detection and defense.

Even though the asteroid doesn’t look like it’s going to hit Earth, on April 13, 2029, it will come closer to Earth than any other near-Earth object that we know of. It will pass just 18,300 miles above the planet’s surface.

We love Cassini more with every amazing image the intrepid spacecraft sends back from its travels, and this latest treat is no exception.

The Cassini imaging team has assembled images of some of Saturn’s moons in action into this sequence, bringing another corner of the solar system to life for us. It’s still unclear to us whether setting the video to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite adds to or subtracts from its appeal, but that’s what the mute button is for.

Our only complaint is that Enceladus doesn’t make an appearance, but we have a separate tribute to our favorite Saturnian moon planned, so stay tuned.

1980 Encounter, Toronto, Canada

First of all, let it be known that I am not a UFO "believer" per say. Although this occurred approximately 30 years ago, I thought it's time to report to various UFO investigation organizations. I hope this is worthy. Thank you.

Around the winter of 1980, January perhaps, I just got off work at 9:30 P.M. from the auto dealership. I was a car salesman at the time. I started driving towards the city of Toronto, Canada, on the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) eastbound to meet some friends at a bar on the Esplanad (a street lined with nightclubs).

I didn't have anything to drink and didn't smoke any pot on that day/evening. As I was driving, I noticed a string of lights slowly rotating counter clockwise over the city of Toronto, at about the ten o'clock position from my point of view. This caught my eye because these formation of lights were very unusual.

The lights were evidently in a circular pattern with about two thirds visible as the other third rotated out of view. Imagine a pie plate with about 25 lights around the circumference of it. As this "pie plate" would revolve, a third of these lights would be hidden from view as if they were obstructed by a solid body. It was at night so all I could see was these rotating string of lights but they were definitely on a "fixed" platform as the lights were revolving in unison.

Although I've heard of UFO's and was curious, at that time in my life, I didn't really give that much thought about them. I've always been interested in nature and especially about the universe. I've seen all kinds of aircraft and advertising blimps at night before.

I drove taxi's off and on for fifteen years on the night shift and have seen countless meteors, lightening, satellites etc. On two occasions I've even seen extremely bright, slow falling, green fireball meteors lighting up the ground, for a couple of seconds, as if it was daylight . I've read, in later years, were other witnesses reported green fireballs as UFO's. I chuckled to myself thinking how easily "UFO believers" can be fooled by natural phenomenon.

Anyway, these circle of lights were slowly descending and approaching towards me (westbound), while I was driving about 115 kilometers per hour on the highway (eastbound). These lights were getting closer and closer as "we" approached each other. I recall thinking to myself that this must be some kind of advertising balloon and those lights were letters.

As I kept driving, I was paying more and more attention to this object because the closer it was getting, the more unusual it looked. I kept glancing at it, while driving, waiting until it was close enough to read what these letters were saying, still thinking it was some kind of advertising blimp. The closer it got, the more I looked at it.

Now at my nine o'clock position, the string of rotating lights appeared to started to bank left like an airplane would "turning right". Actually it wasn't banking at all. It was dipping forward pointing towards the ground. At this point, I realized that these lights were not letters at all. They were different shaped, yellowish white lights. The reason these lights were different in shape was because they were "inset" into some solid body. When the lights were seen head on, they were circular. But as they rotated out of "direct" view, they changed shape like the different crescents of the moon. That's why they appeared to be all different shapes.

During the time when this object started to bank left, or I thought from my point of view, I was struggling with myself trying to understand whether this was a plane, blimp, or a balloon. It was flying too slow for a plane, yet, too fast for a blimp. Also, it didn't appear to be flying or floating. The best way I can describe it's motion is that it looked like it was "sailing" in the sky.

What's interesting here is that the human brain tries to associate what the eyes are seeing, to something already seen or experienced before. That's why I was at war with myself trying to decide whether this object was a plane, blimp or a balloon. Every time I resigned myself to what I must be witnessing, I jumped to another conclusion. This jumping from one conclusion to another occurred during the whole experience. I was imagining all kinds of things.

For example, if it was a plane, the only way these lights could have been positioned was in a circle because this plane must have had some kind of supporting structure in a circle from wing tip to wing tip. This didn't make any sense at all. I've seen advertising planes before. This was nothing like this. Not even close. Than I was trying to imagine a "Goodyear blimp" with these letters going across it's side. This was nothing like it either.

So here I was, trying to drive and watch this object at the same time. As I was driving, I started to slow down because I kept looking at this circle of lights more than the road ahead of me. In retrospect, I don't even know how I kept my car on the road because I was so awed by this display in the sky.

Here is the killer.

As the object kept dipping forward more and more, it eventually ended up totally perpendicular to the ground! The first thing that came to mind was a big Ferris wheel rotating in the sky. At this point I slowed down to about 50 KPH (30 miles an hour in a 60 MPH highway for my American friends) and put my four way, flashing hazard lights on my car fearing that another car would crash into the back of me for going so slow on a 100 KPH highway.

Here is another shocker.

As I was mesmerized by this strange looking object, a surge of adrenaline hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn't realize how BIG this thing was. At first I thought it was the size of an airplane fairly close. IT WAS GIGANTIC! At least twice the size of a football field, bigger than an aircraft carrier!!! I don't know what gave away it's size.

Maybe the reflections of light on the ground. The best way I can relate this sudden realization is like one of those illusions most of us have seen. You know, when you look at a pixel drawing with an image you can't see until you stare at it for a while?

After a period of time, you make out the face of a women or something like that? That's kind of the transformation I experienced. At first I thought the object was the size of a large plane than suddenly I REALLY saw it. IT WAS HUGE!!! I yelled out loud to my self, "Holey F**k, IT'S HUGE!!!". I don't F***ing believe it, it's F***ing HUGE!!!. I thought it was fairly close at first, than bang!, it was much farther away and larger than my brain first comprehended it. Speaking about this surge of adrenaline.

Have you ever had a really close call having a car accident? When your heart rate skyrockets to about 180 beats per minute? That's what I felt when I realized how GARGANTUAN this object was! I could actually feel my heart pounding like crazy. To be frank, it literally scared the hell out of me, when I realized how big it was. At this point, I rolled down my window and pointed to this giant "Ferris wheel" in the sky to the other motorists, but it appeared no one seemed to notice as they screamed by me at regular highway speeds. I remember how cold it was when I rolled down my window. It was something like minus 30 Celsius below zero.

After, I don't know how long, probably only a few seconds of rotating in this perpendicular position, this thing started to climb and right itself and "sail" back to the direction it originally came from. I rolled up my window, turned off my hazard lights, and started to speed up to chase it. Still it seemed other motorists didn't notice this object.

It still irks me to this day. As I was approaching the city limits, this object was in it's flat position again climbing over the city. Then, all of a sudden, the rotating lights turned off except for a red "aircraft like" blinking light (which I never noticed before). After a few seconds, the rotating lights turned on again. It was like in the movie "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind". The lights just blasted on. Than after a few seconds they turned off again as it seemed to be right over the city. Strange behavior.

Now I was exiting off of the highway on to Spadina Rd. I lost track of these lights because of the tall buildings. When I was on the street where I was going, I saw a cop parked on the other side of the road writing a parking ticked. I stopped in the middle of the road and ran over to him. He was quite taken aback by my seemingly aggressive approach. I asked him, "how long have you been here?" I forgot what he said, but I asked, "did you see that big circle of lights flying in the sky? He said "no". After parking my car, I met my friends at the bar, "Baily's", and told them what happened but they didn't take me seriously as they've already had a few and were more interested in the ladies.

After sitting at the bar by myself for a couple of hours I went home. I was living at my parent's house at the time, temporarily, so when I got home around 1 A.M., I called the police. I didn't know who else to phone at the time. They didn't take me seriously of course so after that, I phoned the Toronto International Airport and managed to get through to Air Traffic Control and asked them if they had anyone call in with a UFO report. Nothing.

So I called the police again and convinced them to take me seriously as I wanted to make a report. They told me they can send a couple of officers to my house. As it was late and my parents were asleep, I told them I'd rather come to the station the next day to report. Next morning, when I contemplated going in I decided not to, fearing they would think I'm some kind of wacko.

As the days went by, scanning the newspapers looking for a "UFO sighting" to no avail, I started doubting myself. I was trying to convince myself that perhaps I was somehow mistaken. Maybe it was something not out of the ordinary at all. Maybe it was a balloon or airplane of some kind. Maybe like thousands of others, I witnessed something that I misinterpreted for something else. And now the conclusion.

About a week or so later, on or about the tenth page of the Toronto Star, bottom right hand corner, there it was! A short article. "Dozens of Mississauga residents reported a UFO as big as a football field!!!" I don't recall the whole article. "Finally" I said to myself. "I knew it was real", "I knew I didn't imagine this".

I'll never, ever, doubt myself again no matter how much ridicule I'll be subjected to. I have only one regret however. That is I wish I had others with me to experience this. After about 30 years, I just had to let this out.

Robert Bigelow is one of my personal heroes, a space man who can – and will – change the world because he believes so. Now, the FAA says that you should call one of his mysterious companies if you see an UFO.

Bigelow’s main space company – Bigelow Aerospace – already has two private test space stations in low Earth orbit: Genesis 1 and 2. His plan is to have a hotel in orbit, and he’s steadily on course to achieve his objectives. The guy and his Errol Flynn moustache may seem eccentric to some, but he means business.

But Bigelow is also a man who truly loves space, and everything that has to do with it. His multi-million dollar investment is not only about hotels in space. Another of his companies is Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies. According to the last order by Federal Aviation Administration – issued on December 10 – BAASS is now the organisation to contact if you are a pilot or an air traffic controller who gets close to an Unidentified Flying Object:

They don’t list the number or email of the military, nor some special branch of the Secret Service, nor the CIA, nor NASA. But BAASS. Is this a crazy company? Hardly so. Here’s their own description:

The print was found and a scan made 12/5/09. My father never mentioned seeing the object but when we returned to the States in 1959, I remember him being a friend of Roger Early who was somehow connected with Project Blue Book. I believe the neg may have been given to Early. I do know that from living in Torremolinos, kids back then did not play with kites, model planes or paper planes. All the kids on the beach were poor fisherman's kids. My father used a Nikon Rangefinder camera, Plus-x film and was shooting the fishing boat to use as a subject in one of his paintings. He was a famous painter (Google: Ben Stahl). The exposure seems to be f8 or 16 @ 1/250 or 1/125 because of the frozen action of the waves in the photograph and the depth of field. It's not a blur of a bird, tear on the neg or delamination on the print. The print has a fold (visible on the picture across the horizon). The surface of the original print is clean. I used "unsharp mask" in photoshop to bring the scan in better focus. This produced marking on the body of the object. Note the shadows on the object are consistent with shadows on the man behind the boat. The man is shielding his eyes and looking at something down the beach, in the sky or out at sea and not at the object overhead. Perhaps there were two objects? The object in the photograph has an odd perspective as it looks far away yet close over the shore line. Also, note the disturbance in the air at both ends of the object. It also cannot be something on the lens as this would be totally blown out of focus. I've searched other photographs and have failed to see any other object with the same shape. Bruce Maccabee saw the image and could not come up with an answer as to what it could be. Nothing in a camera, especially a SLR, can produce such an effect. If something was thrown in front of the camera it would not have produced the "air disturbance" as shown - these are not developing streaks either. Please let me know what you think. Heard about the monster planet ‘X’ heading towards Earth at a speed of 20,00,000 miles a year and could hit anytime after 2010? Our MPs have.

On Thursday, this was one of the questions they posed to the government, which found itself at a loss for answers.

An unstarred question put up by Rajya Sabha MPs Rajkumar Dhoot (Shiv Sena) and Naresh Gujral (Shiromani Akali Dal) asked, “Whether it is a fact that planet ‘X’ is heading towards Earth at a speed of 20,00,000 miles a year and may come close or collide with it anytime after 2010 to cause destruction like earthquake and tsunami?”

Apart from details, they wanted the government to enlighten them whether this had any links with the Mayan civilisation calendar and whether the Government was taking any preventive steps.

Minister of State for Science and Technology Prithviraj Chavan’s reply was brief: “There is no factual basis for this (question).”

When asked where he got to know about such a planet, Dhoot told The Indian Express: “I saw reports about planet X in some news channels. So I thought I should ask the government.”

Gujral simply said the question was Dhoot’s idea.

Incidentally, the recent Hollywood blockbuster 2012 dealt with life coming to an end on Earth coinciding with a prediction in the Mayan calendar. And, incidentally, this wasn’t the only outer space worry that occupied MPs.

Another question put to the Science and Technology Minister by Congress’s Vijay Jawaharlal Darda and Gireesh Kumar Sanghi, was “whether the government is aware that 32 planets have been found in the solar system, thereby increasing the number of planets discovered outside the solar system to more than 400”.

They wanted the government to give supporting evidence that life could develop elsewhere in the universe and wanted to know whether the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) could include “further pursuance of this syndrome in our forthcoming space projects”.

Of this, Chavan said, the government was well informed.

“Though the number of extra planets discovered is more than 32, most of them do not have the temperature and environment conducive for possible existence of any form of life,” he said.

He also clarified that ISRO couldn’t pursue the matter because of technological problems but that ground-based observations for extra planets are being planned at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.

HOVERING ominously over the city, this video of what appears to be a triangle-shaped UFO has left Russians baffled.

Sitting motionless in the sky above the Kremlin in Moscow, clips of the unexplained object have become the most-viewed videos on Russia's YouTube.

The two videos, one taken at night from a car and one during the day, were both filmed by amateurs.

The UFO hovered for several hours over Red Square in the Russian capital and was seen by hundreds of people.

The identity of the shape has not been confirmed but internet forums are buzzing with details about the sighting.

The UFO appeared on December 9, the same night a mysterious blue spiral light appeared over Norway.

That was later attributed to a failed rocket launch from Russia.

Some have likened the object to one of the spaceships from the feature film Star Wars.

But others have said it is merely a reflection from inside the cameraman's car.

If the object exists, experts estimate that it could be up to 1.6km wide.

Some commentators have reacted sceptically to the videos and have pointed out that if hundreds of people had seen the object more videos and photos would have emerged by now.

Russian reports ruled out a UFO but police have refused to comment.

Nick Pope, a former analyst with the British Ministry of Defence UFO, said it was "one of the most extraordinary UFO clips I've ever seen".

"At first I thought this was a reflection but it appears to move behind a powerline, ruling out this theory."

A spokesman for aerospace journal Jane's News said: "We have no idea what it is."

The Province of Buenos Aires, according to FAO study, is a key region that includes the Federal Capital area. “The Porteño region reports permanent sightings of strange flying objects, even with diurnal and nocturnal photographs and videos.

For example, the material presented by Hector Boetto, LINK. Unidentified air traffic over the Argentinean capital is still a pending matte, especially with the total passivity of the media and government authorities… The area of Vicente Lopez, to the north of the city, is one of the highest UFO manifestation areas in the entire country.

Incredibly, events are reported at different times of day in Munro, Olivos, Florida, etc. and a considerable quantity of photos of these objects are taken, such as the remarkable sightings by Matías Mannara in Munro, LINK, and Bibiana Bryson, LINK, which include unique documents showing spindle-shaped UFOs among others.

Phantom UFOs have also been picked up at Villa Ballester, near Vicente Lopez,” says Burgos in his report.

Burgos highlights in his report that “lovely Mar del Plata always surprises us with manifestations of all types, and while it isn’t the exceptional case history offered by the 1960’s to the 1990’s, in recent years, the Sierra de los Padres area has turned into a new area for “phantom UFOs”. Proof of this can be seen in the permanent records obtained by Graciela Donalisio and Leonardo Rieger.”

Indian researchers say they have found organic matter on the moon, a discovery that may be seconded by U.S. teams analyzing a plume of debris kicked up by the deliberate crash of a rocket body into a lunar crater.

Finding organic materials on the moon could help scientists understand the history of comet and meteorite impacts, as well as provide valuable resources for future lunar travelers or colonies.

Indian Space Research Organization scientists announced last week that a probe dispatched from the Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter detected chemical signatures of organic matter. The Moon Impact Probe, or MIP, separated from the Chandrayaan-1 orbiter on Nov. 14, 2008, and flew into Shackleton Crater, located on the moon's south pole.

NASA followed with a similar mission in October that excavated a much larger debris plume from the crater Cabeus, also located on the moon's south pole. Both teams reported finding water.

ISRO's Surendra Pal said at a conference in Bangalore, India, last week that MIP also found organic compounds, though scientists were still working to confirm the results.

"It is an intriguing suggestion," NASA's chief lunar scientist Michael Wargo told Discovery News. "We are certainly very interested in learning more of their results."

NASA scientists, meanwhile, are continuing to scrutinize data collected by the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, and other probes which watched as a 2.5-ton empty rocket body smashed into the floor of Cabeus, kicking soil and ice past the crater's rim and into sunlight for the first time in billions of years.

Organic compounds are composed of carbon in combination with other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Although they form the building blocks of life, they do not necessarily come from actual organisms.

Instead, they could have been created in outer space through chemical reactions and later delivered to the moon by comets or meteorites. One particular type of organic compound, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, has been found in a wide variety of space environments.

NASA previously found molecules of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen in lunar soil samples brought back to Earth during the Apollo missions of 1969 -1972, but the concentrations were extremely sparse. No complex compounds were found, although they likely were delivered to the moon by meteorites crashing into the lunar surface.

"Apparently, the harsh surface conditions destroy the more complex molecules exposed to space," Paul Spudis, senior scientist with the Houston-based Lunar and Planetary Institute, wrote in an email to Discovery News.

The moon's cold spots are different, he added.

"We've suspected that they might contain organic molecules for the same reason that water ice is there -- they are protected by the extreme cold," Spudis said.

Initial results from LCROSS show some organic material was present in the debris plume, though exactly what and how much has not yet been determined.

Bangalore: Scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) are on the brink of a path-breaking discovery. They may have found signs of life in some form or the other on the Moon.

They believe so because scientific instruments on India's first unmanned lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, picked up signatures of organic matter on parts of the Moon's surface, Surendra Pal, associate director, Isro Satellite Centre (Isac), said at the international radar symposium here on Friday.

Organic matter consists of organic compounds, which consists of carbon -- the building block of life.

It indicates the formation of life or decay of a once-living matter.

Pal said the signatures were relayed back to the Bylalu deep space network station near Bangalore by the mass spectrometer on board the Indian payload, the moon impact probe (MIP), on November 14, 2008.

The relay of data happened moments before it crashed near the Moon's south pole. The MIP was the first experiment of the Chandrayaan-1 mission, which was launched on October 22, 2008.

Pal, however, did not elaborate, but concluded saying "the findings are being analysed and scrutinised for validation by Isro scientists and peer reviewers".

"It is too early to say anything," said the director of Isro's space physics laboratory R Sridharan, who is heading the team of MIP data analysis and study. He, however, did not deny the finding.

DNA later inquired with other senior Chandrayaan-1 mission scientists, who not only confirmed the finding, but gave further details.

"Certain atomic numbers were observed that indicated the presence of carbon components. This indicates the possibility of the presence of organic matter (on the Moon)," a senior scientist told DNA.

Interestingly, similar observations were made by the US's first manned Moon landing mission, the Apollo-11, in July 1969, which brought lunar soil samples back to Earth. But due to a lack of sophisticated equipment then, the scientists could not confirm the finding.

However, traces of amino acids, which are basic to life, were found in the soil retrieved by the Apollo-11 astronauts.

The Chandrayaan-1 scientists, at present, are analysing the source of origin of the Moon's organic matter. "It could be comets or meteorites which have deposited the matter on the Moon's surface; or the instrument that landed on the Moon could have left traces," a senior space scientist said.

"But the presence of large sheets of ice in the polar regions of the Moon, and the discovery of water molecules there, lend credence to the possibility of organic matter there," he said.

Russia/Norway Compared

Now I have to say Norway is a completely different animal all together just in the nature of the major differences.. We are now comparing apples with oranges here.. I am no longer convinced of the excuse given for the Norway incident.

Evidence is overwhelming that intelligently controlled vehicles are visiting the Earth, which would lead to a cosmic Watergate if disclosed by the government, a nuclear physicist said Saturday in Murfreesboro.

Physicist Stanton T. Friedman said he has not seen an unidentified flying object but he hasn’t seen Tokyo either, even though he knows the city exists.

His beliefs are based on years of study and interviews with citizens who sighted UFOs.

Friedman, known as the Flying Saucer Physicist, made his remarks before 80 people during the Tennessee Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network meeting at the Baymont Suites on Armory Drive. He is a former classmate of Carl Sagan.

During his lecture, Friedman outlined four conclusions:

• The evidence is overwhelming that Planet Earth is being visited by intelligently controlled extraterrestrial spacecraft. In other words, some UFOs are alien spacecraft. Most are not.

• The subject of flying saucers represents a kind of Cosmic Watergate, meaning that some few people in major governments have known since July, 1947, when two crashed saucers and several alien bodies were recovered in New Mexico, that indeed some UFOs are ET. As noted in 1950, it’s the most classified U.S. topic.

• None of the arguments made against the first two conclusions by a small group of debunkers such as Carl Sagan, Friedman’s University of Chicago classmate for three years, can stand up to careful scrutiny.
 
• The Flying Saucer story is the biggest story of the millennium: visits to Planet Earth by aliens and the U.S. government's cover-up of the best data (the bodies and wreckage) for over 50 years.

The federal government is not close to disclosure about UFOs because it would have serious implications to technology and the economy. Church attendance would increase but the stock market would decrease. Fundamentalist church groups would be upset because it would be a contradiction to their doctrine.

Also, governments fear young people will feel allegiance to the world, not their own countries. Big powers would be afraid of loss of power.

UFOs are coming to Earth using energy the world doesn’t know about now, he said. Big oil companies might feel threatened if this technology were shared with mankind.

The more education a person has, the more likely they are to believe the Earth is being visited by UFOs, Friedman said.

Friedman first became interested in UFOs after reading a book in 1958. He worked for 14 years on the development of classified, advanced nuclear and space systems for GE, General Motors, Westinghouse, McDonnell Douglas and Aerojet General Nucleonics.

He gave his first lecture in 1967 and in the mid-1970s began the civilian investigation of the recovery of crashed flying saucers near Roswell, N.M.

Friedman spoke to Jesse Marcell Sr., who was the intelligence officer at a nearby air base. Marcell went to the crash site with a rancher and viewed the debris field. Jesse Marcell Jr. later wrote “Roswell Legacy” about his father’s experiences and his recollection of his father bringing home part of the debris.

Friedman interviewed Barney and Betty Hill, who claimed they were abducted Sept. 19, 1961 while driving in New Hampshire. They went under hypnosis separately and told about their experiences.

He has published more than 90 UFO articles, co-authored “Crash at Corona: The Definitive Study of the Roswell Incident” and the new 2008 “Flying Saucers and Science.”

During the lecture, Friedman showed members a power point presentation about the Roswell investigation in 1947.

The meeting was broadcast worldwide on short wave.

Max Mitchell of Kingsport, the state chief MUFON investigator, said there have been 96 reports in 2009 of UFOs investigated by MUFON as of November in Tennessee.

Participant Don Odom of Lewisburg, a retired Tennessee Wildlife Resources Officer, said his most memorable sighting while driving. He stopped his truck and a 150-foot long object floated by. It was 300 to 500 feet away and had 22 porthole lights and strobe lights on the top and bottom. It was red, white and blue.

He is now a MUFON field investigator.

Alyson Burgess, director of public relations for Tennessee MUFON headquartered in Memphis, said the mission statement of MUFON emphasizes the scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity.

“We here at Tennessee MUFON take the mission statement to heart by galvanizing our current membership and helping it to grow,” Burgess said. “We may be part of a scientific finding that may benefit mankind.”

The MESSENGER spacecraft's third flyby of the planet Mercury has given scientists, for the first time, an almost complete view of the planet's surface and revealed some dramatic changes in Mercury's comet-like tail.

"The new images remind us that Mercury continues to hold surprises," says Sean Solomon, principal investigator for the mission and director of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

The probe flew by Mercury on Sept. 29th, executing a critical gravity assist maneuver designed to help MESSENGER enter Mercury-orbit in 2011. Despite shutting down temporarily because of a power system switchover during a solar eclipse, the spacecraft's cameras and instruments revealed 6 percent of the planet's surface never before seen at close range, including this picturesque region pocked by impact craters and molded by volcanic activity:

Monster Tsunamis On The Sun Are Real

Sometimes you really can believe your eyes. That's what NASA's STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) spacecraft are telling researchers about a controversial phenomenon on the sun known as the "solar tsunami."

Years ago, when solar physicists first witnessed a towering wave of hot plasma racing along the sun's surface, they doubted their senses. The scale of the thing was staggering. It rose up higher than Earth itself and rippled out from a central point in a circular pattern millions of kilometers in circumference. Skeptical observers suggested it might be a shadow of some kind—a trick of the eye—but surely not a real wave.

"Now we know," says Joe Gurman of the Solar Physics Lab at the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Solar tsunamis are real."

The twin STEREO spacecraft confirmed their reality in February 2009 when sunspot 11012 unexpectedly erupted. The blast hurled a billion-ton cloud of gas (a "CME") into space and sent a tsunami racing along the sun's surface. STEREO recorded the wave from two positions separated by 90o, giving researchers an unprecedented view of the event:

After more than 50 years of investigations and finding no potential threats, the British government has decided to quietly shut down its UFO office. Officials with the Ministry of Defense, which housed the special investigative unit, felt there was no point in continuing to spend £50,000 (about $70,000) a year to delve into reports of UFOs appearing over the United Kingdom.

Since 1950 when the office was opened, British investigators looked into more than 12,000 reports, including 135 in 2008. Most sightings were explained as either natural or man-made phenomena, although approximately 600 over the years remained unexplained. Citizens will no longer be able to file accounts of new sightings now that the government hotline has been discontinued.

Welcome to "Troy" – Mars style. NASA's robotic rover Spirit is bogged down on the Red Planet in a place the rover team named after the ancient city.

So why aren't scientists lamenting?

"The rover's spinning wheels have broken through a crust, and we've found something supremely interesting in the disturbed soil," says Ray Arvidson of the Washington University in St. Louis.

Spirit, like its twin rover Opportunity, has roamed the Red Planet for nearly 6 years. During that time, the rover has had some close calls and come out fighting from each. In fact, it's been driving backwards since one of its wheels jammed in 2006.

From the beginning, the rovers' motto has been "follow the water." Both rovers have been searching Mars for minerals formed in the presence of H2O. Mars appears dry today, but minerals can provide clues that water was once there.

"It's been easy for Opportunity to find such minerals," explains Arvidson. "Opportunity landed in an ancient lake bed. Spirit has had to work much harder. Spirit landed in basaltic plains formed by lava flows chewed up by repeated meteoroid impacts. There's been little evidence of anything that was ever very wet."
But when Spirit reached an area of Mars called the "Columbia Hills," the whole complexion of the mission changed. "Spirit came across iron hydroxide, a mineral that forms in the presence of water. That alerted us to the change. We started coming across more and more rocks formed in the presence of water."

Then Spirit got stuck in a patch of loose soil on the edge of a small crater. Heavy sigh. Stuck again.

But wait!

"Spirit had to get stuck to make its next discovery," says Arvidson.

As the rover tried to break free, its wheels began to churn up the soil, uncovering sulfates underneath.

"Sulfates are minerals just beneath the surface that shout to us that they were formed in steam vents, since steam has sulfur in it. Steam is associated with hydrothermal activity – evidence of water-charged explosive volcanism. Such areas could have once supported life."

"And most amazingly, the boundary between the sulfate-rich soil and the soil with just the generic concentration of sulfates runs right down the middle of the stranded rover. Spirit is lodged on the edge of a crater -- sitting astride the boundary!"

"Also, the robot found that the top of the sulfate material is crusty. Ancient sulfates probably formed this crust as they were processed by variations in climate associated with changes in Mars' orbit over millions of years."

Here's what the scientists think: When a Martian pole faces the sun in Martian summer, it gets warmer at that pole and the water ice shifts to the equator. It even snows there! Warm dark soil under the snow causes the bottom layer of snow to melt. The water trickles into the sulfates, dissolving the water-soluble iron sulfates and forming a crust with the calcium sulfates remaining.

"By being stuck at Troy, Spirit has been able to teach us about the modern water cycle on Mars." Indeed, Spirit's saga at Troy has given scientists material evidence of past water on Mars on two time scales: ancient volcanic times, and cycles ongoing to the present day.

"We've sat here for more than 6 months. That's a long time to take measurements. We've learned a lot. Troy is a good place to be under siege, but we’re ready to leave."

How not to report a UFO

With UFO sightings at record levels, the Ministry of Defence should not have closed its hotline. This is a sad day for science

On December 1 the Ministry of Defence terminated its UFO project. After over 50 years of investigating the phenomenon, the plug was pulled in a most unceremonious way.

The news was slipped out so as not to attract attention. An amendment was made to an existing document in the freedom of information section of the MoD website, entitled "How to report a UFO sighting". The announcement states: "In over fifty years, no UFO report has revealed any evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom." It goes on to say that the "MOD will no longer respond to reported UFO sightings or investigate them". When rumbled, the MoD press office implyied that the money saved (about £50,000 a year) would be spent on body armour in Afghanistan. I doubt it will be. As someone whose 21-year MoD career included a posting in a financial policy division, I suspect that's not how it works. Finance has played a part in this, I am sure. The defence budget is under huge pressure and the UFO project was doubtless an easy target for the Treasury and MoD financiers.

Between the 1950s and the present day, the MoD received around 12,000 UFO reports. While most were misidentifications of ordinary objects and phenomena, about 5% remained unexplained. These included instances where UFOs were seen by police officers and pilots, or tracked on radar.

Having worked on the UFO project from 1991 to 1994, I am very sorry to see the MoD disengage in this way. I believe that where evidence suggests that UK airspace has been penetrated by an unidentified object, this must automatically be of defence interest and should be investigated properly. Not because I believe Britain is vulnerable to an alien attack, but because "if it doesn't behave like a conventional aircraft, we're not interested" is a very dangerous mindset. Britain remains vulnerable to espionage and terrorist attack. What if the "UFO" turns out to be a prototype spyplane or drone? What if it's a hijacked aircraft with its transponder turned off? This is not the time to take our eye off the ball but this is precisely what has happened. Because of the baggage that the term "UFO" carries, the baby has been thrown out with the bathwater.

My only hope is that – away from the public gaze – sightings from pilots and uncorrelated targets tracked on radar will continue to be looked at, albeit outside of a formally constituted UFO project. But by cutting out the public, the MoD will only fuel conspiracy theories. UFO sightings are at record levels and public interest is at an all-time high. Whatever one's views about them, this is a sad day for science. One of the greatest mysteries of the modern era is now much less likely to be resolved.

I think the rational of the British Military/Government is correct in its conclusion that nothing has proven to be a direct threat to the Uk and its air space.. National security is the bottom line and there has been no direct threat ever recorded that is publicly known thus far. Here in ... See MoreCanada we are in the same boat as well. Our documents that were released show no threat as well. Early days there was a concern voiced about airspace and national security and was studied. Conclusions were the same as the UK. Another couple of issues are the obvious, money and the giggle factor. This also hopefully signifies a more over possibility for a complete shift and move for global disclosure, thus not needing departments to investigate and waste money on an issue that the answer is already known.There has been a wide sweeping change in direction from the more professional communities of religion and sciences towards the idea of extraterrestrial life. EG: the Vatican, Moon water, Mars water, Mars Methane, Mars Meteorite with fossilized microbes, images of other exoplanets like ours. The list continues and now several military and governments around the world coughing up their X files so to speak and now this. All individually seems like not much, but combined in a bigger picture points to something that may be profound. All we need now is SETI to come forward and spill some news of a confirmed signal.

An MoD statement on the matter is a little more expansive. It says: "The MoD has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra-terrestrial life. However, in over 50 years, no UFO report has revealed any evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom."

Nick Pope who ran the UFO project in early 1990s said the decision to scrap it was "outrageous". Speaking to the Sun, which broke the story, he said: "We're leaving ourselves wide open to terrorist attack."

The last major UFO scare in Britain earlier this year involved claims that aliens had destroyed windturbines in Lincolnshire, after sightings of "massive balls of light". But then a "local blogger for a small newspaper group" revealed that her family had hosted a fireworks party in the area.

At the time Pope said: "Even if there is a terrestrial explanation in this case, that won't be the end of our fascination with UFOs."

The same could be said for the scrapping of the UFO project. Just don't call the MoD.

NASA scientists believe these are the first pictures of a colony of Martians - in the UK.

The microscopic aliens are on a slice of a meteorite in London's Natural History Museum.

The scientists, who used a scanning electron microscope to take snaps, say the bumpy surface resembles a fossilized colony of micro bacteria - a simple form of life.

The meteorite from Mars fell on Egypt in 1911.

This for me is now evidence that life exists beyond our own globe.. This is confirmation of something I have known all along. It is a milestone for mankind to see this, yet the mainstream media is barely covering it???? Crazy something like this says life no matter in what shape or form does exist on one of our closest neighbors.. So that says also that the possibilities are astronomical and far beyond the known and accepted drake equation. the numbers would exceed our comprehension. Microbial bacteria from Mars.. Okay it isn't an ET saying hello but it is a start. For me I can say now 100% without hesitation. We are not alone.

Vatican prepares for extraterrestrial disclosure

A major driving force behind the conference was the Director of the Vatican Observatory, the Jesuit priest Father Jose Gabriel Funes. In May 2008, Funes gave an interview to the Vatican’s L’Osservatore Romano newspaper saying that the existence of intelligent extraterrestrials posed no problems to Catholic theology. The conference itself was officially convened by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences, chaired by its religious leader Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, and was held on private Vatican grounds from November 6-10. Together with Funes’ 2008 interview and subsequent public comments by him, the conference demonstrates a welcome openness by the Vatican on the possibility and implications of extraterrestrial life. The Vatican’s openness to discussion of extraterrestrial life is no accident. It is part of an openness policy secretly adopted by the United Nations in February 2008. In fact, the Vatican is playing a leading role in preparing the world for extraterrestrial disclosure.

For most observers, the conference was an innovative scientific gathering sanctioned by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences to show the Holy See’s support for modern science in the detection of extraterrestrial life. The conference primarily focused on the detection of primitive extraterrestrial life forms, and featured presentations from nearly 30 international experts in astronomy, physics and biology. Marc Kaufman from the Washington Post reports:

Scientists (many of them nonbelievers) are offering presentations on subjects as varied as how life might have begun on Earth; what newly found “extremophile” microbes living in harsh places on our planet might tell us about possible life on others; and how life forms might be detected in our solar system, or how their bio-signatures might be found on and around the many distant exoplanets.

Discussion of the implications of intelligent extraterrestrial life, both scientific and theological, did not appear prominently in the conference agenda. One of the presenters, however, Prof Paul Davies commented on the religious implications of discovering intelligent extraterrestrial life: “If you look back at the history of Christian debate on this, it divides into two camps. There are those that believe that it is human destiny to bring salvation to the aliens, and those who believe in multiple incarnations,” Davies pointed out that the multiple incarnations theory, the idea that multiple examples of Jesus Christ would be found in the universe “is a heresy in Catholicism.”

The Vatican, through Funes, is supporting the idea that the incarnation of Christ is a unique event in Earth’s history tied in to humanity’s ‘fall’ and ‘original sin’. This idea was a major focus in Father Funes’ May 2008 interview which was titled “The extraterrestrial is my brother.” Funes said that intelligent extraterrestrial life may not have experienced a ‘fall’, and may be “free from Original Sin … [remaining] in full friendship with their creator.” This makes it possible to regard them as ‘our brothers’ as Funes explained:

Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God. This is not in contrast with our faith because we can’t put limits on God’s creative freedom… “Why can’t we speak of a ‘brother extraterrestrial’? It would still be part of creation…

Most importantly, Funes’ statement makes possible the idea that Christianity can be exported to extraterrestrial worlds that have not experienced a ‘fall’ and are free from original sin.

The Vatican’s new openness on extraterrestrial life is consistent with reports of secret discussions held at the United Nations that began in February 2008. The Vatican’s permanent representative to the UN, Archbishop Celestino Migliore, was reported to have attended along with a number of other prominent government officials to discuss increased UFO sightings and the implications of extraterrestrial visitation. Significantly, Migliore’s position requires that he maintains close relations with the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences. At the time of the secret UN discussions, Migliore made a presentation on moral issues associated with scientific problems such as climate change. Most importantly, the UN discussions reportedly led to a new policy of openness being adopted by approximately 30 nations that would begin in 2009.

Another noteworthy participant reported to have attended the 2008 UN discussions was Britain’s Permanent representative at the time, Sir John Sawers. Sawers was later appointed to head Britain’s prestigious foreign intelligence service MI6. The appointment of a diplomat to head an intelligence service was highly unusual. According to a BBC report: “giving the job to someone more recently associated with diplomatic service was regarded as a break from the tradition.” Seen in the context of the February UN meetings, perhaps MI6 was acknowledging the need for greater diplomacy in dealing with problems posed by a new openness policy on UFOs, and eventual disclosure of extraterrestrial life.

The Vatican sponsored astrobiology conference was a landmark event. It showed that the Vatican was willing to officially sanction public discussions on the existence of extraterrestrial life. More significantly, it showed that the Vatican was willing to initiate a comprehensive dialogue on the theological implications of the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life. The Vatican’s astrobiology conference is yet one more sign that major global institutions are preparing for some kind of formal disclosure concerning UFOs and/or extraterrestrial life. This is a direct outcome of a series of landmark meetings at the UN beginning in February 2008 that led to the adoption of a new openness policy.

After more than a year of openness, the Vatican is taking the openness policy to a new level, and preparing the public for some kind of formal extraterrestrial disclosure announcement. Numerous independent sources have predicted such disclosure is imminent, and that the Obama administration is expected to play a prominent role. The Vatican is also positioning itself to play a major role in such an announcement and in a post-disclosure world. Its emerging theological position that extraterrestrials “are our brothers” is a welcome departure from more hostile depictions of extraterrestrial life found in some religious denominations and in Hollywood movies. On the other hand, the idea that the Vatican could justify sending missionaries to convert extraterrestrials born without original sin, does raise major concerns. The Vatican, nevertheless, is currently playing a constructive role in preparing the public for the imminent disclosure of extraterrestrial life.

A leading astrophysicist who has worked on space missions claims that he and his colleagues are in contact with extraterrestrials who are "living among us." And they don't like what they see.

Latchezar Filipov, head of the Space Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is causing global ripples after researching crop circles around the world.

"We sent (the aliens) 30 questions about global problems," said Filipov, who was vague about how he actually conveyed the queries. "And now we have some answers."

The "answers" came in the form of pictograms in crop circles.

Filipov says the aliens are here, observing us, but unobservable by us for some reason.

"I feel that ... some kind of information is being taught, that they'd like to be in contact with us," Filipov said Friday in halting English from his office in Sofia.

Filipov asked the aliens about the SETI, the broad umbrella project searching for alien life, and the supposed end of the world in 2012, when the Mayan calendar expires.

He told the Star that the aliens have told him SETI doesn't work, owing to a confusion about communication through "magnetic fields."

They also said there is some truth in the 2012 predictions, having something to do with volcanoes in Mexico.

Further, more prosaic revelations include that the aliens are angry about global warming, disagree with in-vitro fertilization and don't like cosmetics. Apparently, Filipov's aliens are grumpy Republicans.

This work is only beginning, Filipov cautioned, and he is still open to the fact that he could be mistaken – "I don't yet believe that this is absolutely true information."

Filipov is no garden-variety crank. He sports an impressive CV: graduate work at Moscow State University, a variety of high-level positions studying astrophysics, work on a MIR spacecraft mission.

However, his latest preoccupation has caught his international contemporaries by surprise.

"I'm not aware of this work," said Ian Corbett, general secretary of the executive committee of the Paris-based International Astronomical Union. "But it is very hard to take seriously."

The IAU website shows Filipov as an active member.

Filipov's colleagues inside Bulgaria are more peevish. There is a move afoot to force his resignation from the Space Research Institute.

Scientists caused quite a stir in 1996 when they announced a meteorite had been found in Antarctica that might contain evidence for microscopic fossils of Martian bacteria. While subsequent studies of the now famous Alan Hills Meteorite shot down theories that the Mars rock held fossilized alien life, both sides debated the issue and the meteorite is still being studied. Now, Craig Covault in Spaceflightnow.com reports that a new look at ALH84001 provides "evidence that supports the existence of life on the surface of Mars, or in subsurface water pools, early in the planet's history." Covault says we can expect a public announcement by NASA Headquarters within a few days.

Research using a more advanced High Resolution Electron Microscopy than was in existence when the initial findings were made 13 years ago has provided the new evidence. Covault reported that the "laboratory sensors are being focused directly on carbonate discs and associated tiny magnetite crystals present inside the meteorite Allen Hills ALH 84001." The data reveal information that counters a "wide range of opposing theories as to why the finding should not be supported as biological in origin."

The new findings were reported in the November issue of the respected journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, the journal of the Geochemical and Meteoritic Society. The authors include Kathie Thomas-Keprta, Simon Clement, David McKay (who led the original team), Everett Gibson and Susan Wentworth, all of the Johnson Space Center.

Covault said the new work centers on what is called magnetic bacteria that on Earth, and Mars as well, leave distinctively-shaped remnants in the rock. These features test with a high chemical purity more like a biological feature than geological.

An official announcement by the Obama administration disclosing the reality of extraterrestrial life is imminent. For several months, senior administration officials have been quietly deliberating behind closed doors how much to disclose to the world about extraterrestrial life. Dissatisfaction among powerful institutions such as the U.S. Navy over the decades-long secrecy policy has given a boost to efforts to disclose the reality of extraterrestrial life and technology.

The impending disclosure announcement follows upon the secret implementation of a year long openness policy on UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Over the period February 12-14, 2008, the United Nations held closed doors discussions where approximately 30 nations secretly agreed on a new openness policy on UFOs and extraterrestrial life in 2009. The openness policy was implemented but never publicly announced due to threats against UN diplomats not to disclose details of the secret agreement. h The secret UN agreement was based on two conditions. First, UFOs would continue to appear around the world; and second, the openness policy would not lead to social unrest in liberal democracies. Both conditions have been satisfied making it possible for the next stage to begin – official disclosure of extraterrestrial life.

Obama’s September 24, 2009 chairing of the UN Security Council meeting on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, signaled his emerging leadership role in tackling major global issues such as nuclear weapons. The Nobel Peace Prize was an important step in giving global legitimacy to President Obama in making an extraterrestrial disclosure announcement. Obama is therefore poised to play a prominent role in the increased global governance that will be necessary after an extraterrestrial disclosure announcement. The timing would most likely coincide sometime soon after his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech on December 10, 2009 in Oslo, Norway.

There have been various sources that have revealed deliberations are underway to make an announcement concerning the existence of extraterrestrial life by the end of 2009. These include, Dr Pete Peterson, a whistleblower who has recently emerged revealing high level discussions have taken place concerning announcing the existence of extraterrestrial life. In a Project Camelot interview, Dr Peterson revealed that “Obama is planning to disclose the reality of ET contact by the end of the year; and that most, but not all, of the ET visitors are friendly.”

Another source is David Wilcock, a prominent researcher of emerging scientific paradigms. Wilcock has been told by additional independent sources that extraterrestrial disclosure will take place by the end of 2009. He furthermore claimed in a Coast to Coast AM radio interview that “a 2-hour international TV special has already been booked that will introduce an alien species, similar to humans, to the world.”

In addition, popular NASA and space researcher, Richard Hoagland, has publicly come forward to reveal that the October 9, LCROSS ‘bombing’ mission of the moon, discovered an ancient base at the moon’s South Pole. Reviewing the scientific data achieved by NASA’s LCROSS mission, Hoagland concluded, also on the popular late night Coast to Coast AM radio show, that “LCROSS is part of a carefully constructed campaign to prepare the populace for imminent disclosure. The President of the United States will soon announce that scientists have discovered ruins on the moon, he added. Nobody saw the LCROSS debris plume because the probes struck a building which swallowed the effects of the explosion.”

Finally, two independent and confidential sources have revealed to me that face to face meetings have recently occurred between U.S. military officials with one or more groups of extraterrestrial visitors. This has allegedly led to confidence being built for future cooperation with the extraterrestrials that will be formally announced to the world public either at the end of 2009, or early 2010.

In conclusion, a diverse number of sources and events point to some form of extraterrestrial disclosure being made by the end of 2009, or early 2010. Official disclosure will most likely emerge in either of two scenarios. One is that President Obama will announce the existence of extraterrestrial visitors, and describe one or more of these to the world. This scenario is supported by Peterson, Wilcock, and my own confidential sources. The second scenario is that an announcement will be made concerning the discovery of artificial structures at the moon’s South Pole, as revealed by the LCROSS mission. This scenario is supported by Hoagland.

Which ever of the above scenarios is used for announcing the existence of extraterrestrial life or technology, President Obama will figure prominently. Behind the scenes, powerful institutions are ensuring that nothing derails the planned disclosure announcement. The disclosure will follow upon a year of greater government openness on UFOs in accord with a policy secretly developed at the United Nations. If extraterrestrial disclosure does occur at the end of 2009 or early 2010, President Obama will lead an unprecedented effort to promote global governance through the United Nations. The Obama administration and its supporters are poised to take a bold step forward in helping our planet become an interplanetary culture that openly deals with the challenges posed by extraterrestrial life.

Fantastic things beyond the ordinary ken, from sailing ships to space ships

Paul Hellyer, a former Canadian defence minister, is an outspoken believer that aliens have in the past, and still are, visiting Earth. He believes the future of our planet could depend on them.

When we sat down together at the Delta Hotel Wednesday, it wasn't a usual interview. No questions. It opened with a statement from the newspaper guy. "I'm a skeptic. Convince me."

An hour later, I had drawn several conclusions. The first being that Hellyer is well north of the sanity line. At 85 he still talks like a politician, easily coming up with names, dates and places. He backs up what he says by throwing in verbal margin notes. He talks about unidentified flying objects (UFOs) without a trace of doubt. They exist. That's all there is to it.

When we parted an hour later, I was still a skeptic, but a more cautious one. It was a discussion of galactic distances that triggered the caution. When our nearest inhabitable planet-neighbour is light years away, it would seem impossible to cross that gap. Hellyer said he didn't have all the answers, but suggested if a body found a way to harness the power of gravity, that may break the speed of light.

Getting the head around that involved going back, and looking at a similar situation faced by another North American skeptical elder, probably in 1497. He must have existed, and he must have wondered if there was another world on the other side, if there was one, of the Atlantic Ocean.

His likely conclusion: It was a moot point. Even if there was another world, people from there could not cross that water. Aside from distance, there were violent storms. No paddlers were strong enough to go the distance, or survive the storms.

That native American had heard rumours of alien visits from people with white skins and flame-coloured hair, going back hundreds of years. (Lief Ericson in Newfoundland in 1003.) But he had only a verbal history to rely on, and being a wise old man he knew time distorted details and fuelled imaginations. But now there were rumours of huge craft appearing on the horizon, but he hadn't seen one. Nobody he knew had seen one close enough to describe it in detail.

Being asked to commit to an opinion, he probably decided to stay skeptical. Nothing could cross that ocean. It never occurred to him that people could build a canoe big enough to ride out ocean storms, and find a power source by harnessing the wind. Why would it? He lived in a world that had not yet seen a wheel or a horse.

So the wise old man relied on his instincts and the knowledge of his lifetime, and said "nuts," or the equivalent.

A few weeks later he was invited to the seaside to meet a man named Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot, 1450-1498). It would have taken some time to get his head around the size and power of the strange craft. The men on it looked like none he had seen before. Swords. Boots. Hats. Gunpowder.

The new arrivals could have anything they wanted, because they had the power of technology. To the south, the alien invaders would take advantage of the power gap and steal land and gold. To the north, in what would become Canada, they engaged in a layaway plan. Take it now and pay later. We're still paying.

The wise old man, by betting against the impossible, lost the trust of his people.

Five hundred years later, another old man sat at a computer keyboard and tried to make sense of an hour with Paul Hellyer. He had too many answers. His beliefs are almost biblical. Everything he says is backed up by something written, or by witnesses. "People who have seen UFOs now number in the thousands, tens of thousands. They can no longer be denied."

Hellyer is also a conspiracy theorist. He believes a global "cabal" has cornered the market on alien visits. Downed spacecraft have been found and dissected and parts given out to be reverse engineered. These have led to the development of fibre optics and the unleashing of the power of the electron.

He says none of his beliefs come from information available to him during his terms as a cabinet minister. "I wasn't in the loop."

He also says he has seen a UFO and, like those Indians of 500 years ago who saw something on the horizon, he knows it's a hard sell. But he's trying.

A spaceship powered by gravity was part of the Dick Tracy comic strip (1931-1977) and so was a villain named Big Boy Caprice, who had the line needed for visitors from space. "Whoever you are, I know we can make a deal."

Flying saucers are so passé. Fireballs, now they're hot.

The truth is out there, people. Whether or not it includes spaceships and aliens is still up for debate, but according to a 20-year longitudinal study of Canadian UFO reports released Tuesday, nearly 15,000 of us have had reason to suspect we are not alone.

The reasons ranged from thousands of sightings of star-like lights manoeuvring oddly in the night sky, to hundreds of sightings of "fireballs" in the sky, to one where dozens of people saw a huge, lantern-shaped object flying slowly over a lake in the Yukon.

Most of the 8,601 UFO sightings reviewed by Winnipeg-based Ufology Research had two witnesses, involved a white object -- even triangles were much more common than your stereotypical saucer or cigar shape -- and lasted an average of 17 minutes.

And we're not just talking about folks who just stumbled out of a bar or those who like to wear tin foil hats here: Reports were filed by witnesses with government and military agencies, police, civilian UFO groups and online UFO websites, says the study's co-author. And report they did. The number of UFO sightings has increased from 141 (in 1989) to more than 1,000 per year.

"It's a persistent phenomena," says Winnipeg ufologist Chris Rutkowski, who co-authored the study with Geoff Dittman. "People are witnessing something in the sky. Whether it's aliens or not is a matter for further study, but there's a small but significant percentage (of sightings) every year that we simply can't explain."

Out of those 8,500-plus UFO cases, only about 14 per cent were labelled as unexplained after review by investigators. And less than four per cent were classified as "close encounters" -- meaning someone claimed to have seen something (or some being) up close.

But Rutkowski, who has degrees in astronomy and education and describes himself as an "open-minded skeptic," says even if one report proves to be valid, it'll be a very important scientific discovery. After the United States Air Force ended its Project Blue Book study of 12,000 UFO cases in 1969 and concluded that UFOs were not a threat to national security, many people assumed the "fad" had passed, he said.

"Here we are 40 years later and not only is the phenomenon not going away, the numbers are increasing. This is hard scientific data and there isn't a comparable study anywhere," said Rutkowski, who presented the 20-year study to UFO researchers, many of whom are scientists, across North America during the recent Mutual UFO Network in Dallas, Texas. "But we're no closer to the truth, in some ways."

Rutkowski currently receives around six UFO reports each week. The most recent and noteworthy, he says, came last Friday from six people who reported seeing a large orange light moving along the shoreline of Dauphin Lake, 15 kilometres east of Dauphin.

"It stopped and then moved away from them. They said it 'moved at a speed we've never seen a plane move at,' and there was no sound at all," Rutkowski recalled.

If UFO sightings statistics are anything to go by, the skies over Canada in 2008 must have looked like an extraterrestrial parking lot.

Canadians saw a record number of unidentified flying objects last year, according to a 20-year study of saucer sightings from coast to coast.

Chris Rutkowski, a 'Ufologist' and science writer in Manitoba, said Tuesday that in the past two decades, 15,000 Canadians have reported seeing 8,600 UFOs. These include sightings of lights in the sky and disc-shaped objects, reported to authorities ranging from the Department of National Defence to airports, police and the RCMP.

He said the number of sightings has skyrocketed since 1989 when 141 were reported. Last year, there were 1,004.

Rutkowski said the hike is probably due to a couple of things. First, it has become easier to report sightings as UFO-dedicated websites provide forms online, he said. As well, there are more satellites and aircraft in the sky — more objects to misinterpret.

And finally, Rutkowski added, there may be more genuine UFOs — airborne objects which can't be identified or explained.

About 14 per cent of the sightings are "unexplained," he said, which means they don't seem to be aircraft or stars or fireballs.

About a tenth of those are called "High Quality Unknowns" based on the wealth of knowledge about the sighting, the number of people who saw the same object, or the high credibility of such witnesses as pilots or police officers.

He said people in Ontario and B.C. report the most sightings, which makes sense based on population. But Albertans and British Columbians see the most UFOs per capita.

Rutkowski said those provinces both have very active data collection websites.

Rutkowski has never seen a UFO himself, but he wants to know why the reports keep coming in.

"People persist in reporting objects that shouldn't be there, so either there's a real phenomenon that needs further study or there's something in the nature of humanity to make them believe they're seeing something," he said. "Either way, it's worth studying."

Rutkowski has no proof that these sightings are aliens buzzing the locals — but he believes the possibility exists.

"It would be nice to think that we're not alone in the universe," he said. "And, if there's a civilization out there that is more advanced than ours, it's certainly possible that they're keeping an eye on us."

After the Inquisitr covered an incident earlier this week where an Unidentified Flying Object crashed into the Ottawa River near Ottawa, Ontario Canada, we received a mysterious email from someone in possession of thousands of previously classified Canadian government documents revealing how the government would deal with the UFO phenomenon should one land on Canadian soil.

The sender of this email attached several samples of said documents and if you’ve wondered why the governments of the United States and Canada never publicly acknowledge the existence of UFOs, it’s because Canada has followed in the footsteps of the US and opted to cover up or downplay such incidents.

On April 19, 1950, recommendations were drawn up by Canada’s Director of Scientific Intelligence at the time, A. J. G. Langly, for debriefing questionaires to be handed out by the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) in the event someone reported a UFO sighting to them.

Section 5. of that document above states:

“5. You might also consider it advisable to add that should the Flying Saucer actually make a landing on Canadian territory, the nearest RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) Command should be advised immediately by telegram or something of the sort.”

“The present USAF policy is to play down the subject, investigating only when considered necessary by the area commander without any special arrangements for reporting or investigation.

2. It seems that a similar policy on our part would be wise and that it would be undesirable to produce a special questionnaire or make any arrangements for investigation since this would give publicity to the matter. It is suggested therefore that sighting reports should not be solicited and such as pro-volunteered should be passed to DSI for retention and further notion only if further notion seems necessary.

3. It may perhaps be advisable to have this matter brought up in committee so that an official decision can be taken.”

The recommendations state that USAF (United States Air Force) policy at the time was to play down UFO sightings, and that the Canadian RCMP should not have a questionaire for people who report such sightings because collecting information would draw publicity to the matter. However, if someone submitted their own written statement of a sighting to police, it should be accepted but passed on to another organization to decide whether or not to investigate.

Research work is underway on another project exploring the Shag Harbour UFO incident of Oct. 4 1967, with a dive on the crash site on July 20 by retired IT professional David Cvet.

Two years in the works but delayed for weather related reasons numerous times, Cvet, who lives in Toronto and summers in the Digby area, said the purpose of the dive was two-fold and was successful on both counts.

First, Cvet wanted to gather intelligence on the water, the seabed and diving conditions in the waters known as the Shag Harbour Rip. He also wanted to try and locate the anomalous sonar readings obtained by the BIO research ship Navicula during a bottom survey of the area in 1988.

The expedition team, comprised of Cvet, diver and underwater photographer Lauren McGowan, local diver Freeland Reynolds and videographer Rick Davis were taken to the dive site aboard the fishing boat, The Receiver General, captained by Vincent Goreham.

With Reynolds and Davis remaining on board, Cvet and McGowan dove on the site on the low tide for minimal tidal movement, and to reduce the depth of the dive thereby maximizing the time spent exploring the bottom.

Cvet likened the water conditions to “pea soup,” with visibility limited to about two meters. During the 25 minutes spent exploring the bottom Cvet located two slight depressions on the ocean floor that were “inconsistent with the surrounding seabed.

“The lack of flora on the depression bottom was observed and thought unusual given the surrounding area was populated with flora and fauna,” writes Cvet in his notes chronicling the expedition.

“The dive was considered a success, as much data was garnered during the dive in terms of water, bottom and dive conditions, useful for planning future dive expeditions,” says Cvet.

“The discovery of the depressions, which may or may not play the part of the original sonar anomalies was a bonus, but, given only two were observed, the outcome remains inconclusive.”

Cvet hopes to do a second dive with additional equipment and instrumentation, sometime within the next year. Eventually Cvet is hoping his research will turn into a documentary.

“I think the Shag Harbour incident is one of those rare instances where it has not been commercialized,” said Cvet, adding himself as well as other researchers and writers on the subject have been trying to “do everything in a very creditable way. I think it’s good for the people of Shag Harbour that it’s being done very carefully with conservative methodology. Then the yahoos can’t say it’s all fake.”

Cvet, who teaches martial arts when he’s not exploring in the paranormal, will be one of the presenters at the 2009 UFO Festival and Symposium on Aug. 14 and 15.

Hosted by the Shag Harbour UFO Incident Society activities for the two day event will be held at the UFO Centre in Shag Harbour and the Barrington Area Lions Club.

We were about 2 minutes from the turnoff to go through security check and back into the group camping area. It was just above the trees crossing the highway. Moving from the left to the right side of the highway. It was about 15 feet away from us, moving towards the area where the festival was. We then turned down the dirt path which lead to the security check area. As we approached the security to have the car searched we could see it coming over the trees towards the event. We pointed it out to the girl who searched our car and she mentioned that it had been seen several times the first night and that night as well. Apparently the police had seen it too and the girl who was performing the search was frighten of the object.

It passed over the car about 40 to 50 feet in the air above us. It was a very large glowing red sphere which pulsed orange and green and had a quality of light was very unusual and reminded me of a mirage. By that I mean that it seemed to be extremely hot. It was so close and so clear there is absolutely nothing that could explain it away as something mundane. It was clearly a sphere. Some people wait there whole lives to see something like this- Phenomenal.

Description: So, I was watching televison around 11 on the sofa facing the bay window from the corner of my eye I cought a glimpse of a farly large green opject heading north to the earth. It wasnt travaling as fast as a shooting star it was a lot slower then that, also very bright green. So many thoughts went threw my head wondering what it could have been, a meteor came across my mind, but I had never seen something of that bright glowing green. So I jumped right out of my chair to grap my parents who were sitting with me at the time to catch a look, but of course I was to late to grap them. 10/15 mins later I was continued to watch the tv and watch outside as well around this time I was looking outside I noticed this very bright light in the north direction where I had seen the green ball. I just looked away thinking it was an airplane, but a couple mintues after I looked again to see that light was in the same spot almost hovering so this time I grap my mom to see this, while we were looking we noticed this object had vanished and appreared higher in the sky with a flashing red/orange light we had never seen anything like this, I was starting to ask myself questions like could this acually be what I was thinking, soon other lights appreared in the sky beside this flashing light hovering as well. So this point I grab my father to ask for his opion oh what he thought this could be his first responce was there helicopters, then they vanished and reapeared, his second responce was nothing. I observed these lights for another 30 mintutes by this time there was no further sightings. So days go by and Sunday March 9th around 10:30 I was watching some more telvision and looked out the window just to observe, the days before that I had seen no other lights, an then the lights appeared more north/west I have never seen anything so bizzare in my life, and every day since I have been observing the skys more often....well I found a video on you tube for everyone to check out ...the green ball that I saw on march 5th was a meteor so check it out it was pretty neat.

Dear Brian, In the email body below is a little account of the anomaly myself and 3 other witnesses seen. It happened roughly between 9:20 PM to 9:40 PM. I don't have the exact time because wrist watches don't work on me, so I gave up on them and nobody else had the exact time, but when we walked back to the car it was 10:05pm and it was about a 10 minute walk we also stayed there for about 5 minutes after seeing it. The date was Saturday January 24th 2009. Location was in Grimsby, Ontario right bye the shores of Lake Ontario. It's in the Northwestern corner of the Lake and Between Hamilton and St.Catherine's, Ontario.The two other witnesses wish to remain unknown but can be contacted through telephone. The third witness was my young son.

In the pictures it is the same object but in two different colours. All I did was blown them up 3 separate times for each of the 2 pictures. I took a few more pictures but nothing came up, just the pictures I'm sending you.

Through the binoculars it had the 4 colours in pattern of green, white, yellow and red. But when we took the pictures it came out as solid white and solid red? The object moved a lot slower than a plane. To put it in perspective when the plane flew in when we first started to notice the object the plane was seen and gone in about 2 minutes if that. The movement of the object seemed to be coming in a capital L direction reversed from the St. Catherine's area toward Grimsby, then out toward the United States part of the Lake.

If you need to call or get in touch with the other witnesses, they said they will talk via telephone. After all this we joked with each other and went to believe it or not the Flying Saucer Restaurant for a bite to eat and warm up with coffee in Niagara Falls at 6768 Lundy's Lane. It was a cold typical Canadian night.

So that's all of it.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: Myself and two daughters aged 19 and 15 have seen several sighting together as well as individually. One of their friends was also over at out house during one of these episodes. We lived close to a mountain and on several occasions we have witnessed two smaller lights shoot out of a bigger light that was amber in color. The two descended to the top of the mountain and hovered briefly before dislodging something from below. Then one could very briefly see a flash from behind the ridge. They would do this 2 or 3 times before shooting straight up very quickly and disappearing into thin air! Another night at the same house there was suddenly 25 or more really bright lights that were about 10 times the brightness of any star and they would flash and twirl around. This went on for about 40 minutes before they all stopped at once.

We moved to a new house and I would occasionally see a couple of really fast moving objects in the sky. Then one night we grabbed a couple blankets and lay in the yard watching the sky. That night we saw 35-40 very fast moving objects that would vary their activities from shifting from really high rates of speed to hovering to quick descent and ascent patterns and just plain disappearing. This took less than 2 hours. Most recently we (my 19yr old and I) experienced a simultaneous loss of time when we both awoke abruptly at 1:30 in the afternoon! We are both early risers so to be in bed until the afternoon was very shocking to us.

My daughter said her back felt funny and when I looked at it there were at least 50 poke marks in her skin. These healed and were not detectable the same night. I had 2 punctures beneath each of my eyebrows that were red in the center and swollen around the edges. The next day my scalp seemed itchy and when I scratched i felt many small scabs scattered all over my scalp. However we both felt refreshed and full of positive energy and a definite feeling of well being followed us for days. I don't know for a fact if we were 'taken' as there is no memory of anything. I do know that the circumstances were highly unusual.

Hi BJ, great day to share with you this June 2009, as always. I have been passed an odd photo from my friend Jack, from Ajax.

A new fellow at work has recently started a job with Jack’s firm. In conversation, UFOs in topic surfaced. Sal opened up to Jack, in telling his tales of what he and other Cottagers have witnessed through the years.

He also noted that many have been seen in the month of August mostly. I have spoken on the phone with Sal to follow up the details regarding these extraordinary pictures. Sal told me the following about these pictures he has kept up to today.

He sounded quite sincere in tone, as I feel the pictures are genuine. These pictures were taken by his daughter Leanna, back in August 2008. Sebastian, her 11-year-old brother, was also was taking pictures randomly that day.

They were traveling on Hwy 45 in the Kawarthas region, near Rice Lake. Leanna took many pictures as they traveled along up the northern road, near dusk, as illustrated. Many pictures were taken through the windshield, in testing her new camera heading to their cottage.

Later at home, Sal noted the image on the computer, and had no idea who to send these pictures to in sharing. He said there were other pictures taken before and after these two pictures. This strange square craft is only in the two pictures I sent, no others.

Talk about a picture that says a thousand words in description. For your eyes to examine this type of rare craft ? This is just another example of the many types/shapes of crafts flying out there around us, even here in Ontario!

ROSWELL DEBRIS CONFIRMED AS EXTRATERRESTRIAL: Lab Located, Scientists Named

Newly discovered documents reveal that in the months immediately following the purported 1947 UFO crash at Roswell, secret government studies began on a material that was previously unknown to science. The "memory metal" that was studied precisely matches some of the debris material reported by several witnesses to the crash. Evidence shows that -under military direction- these unique metal studies were undertaken by a contracted laboratory that possessed advanced technical capabilities that the U.S. government itself did not have at the time. A former high-level scientist employed by the involved laboratory has offered a confession that he was tasked to study the crashed UFO material. Information provided by two U.S. Air Force Generals also offers direct support for this discovery.

The documents suggest that after the crash, the US government attempted to develop a unique material that is today referred to as memory metal. This shape-recovery alloy was reported by several witnesses to the Roswell crash in the summer of 1947. The lightweight "morphing" material was able to be crumpled or deformed and then return itself instantly and seamlessly to its original state. The metallurgical discoveries that resulted from these studies were then "seeded" for further technology development to other government agencies (including NASA) and through a series of military contracts to universities and industry.

The laboratory contracted by Wright Patterson Air Force Base to perform these studies was Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, OH. It has been credibly reported that Wright Patterson Air Force Base was the very base where the Roswell UFO debris was flown after the crash.

Recently obtained documents reveal that these studies for Wright Patterson were conducted at Battelle under the direction of Dr. Howard C. Cross. In the late 1940's, H.C Cross was Battelle's expert scientist in exotic metallurgy and Titanium alloy research.

Curiously –although he was a research metallurgist- Cross was also Battelle’s "point person" in later studies on UFOs that Battelle conducted in the early 1950's for the U.S. Air Force's official UFO study, Project Bluebook. Cross is likely an author of Project Bluebook's still-missing Report Number 13. He is also the author of a strange letter from Battelle to Wright Patterson known as "The Pentacle" memo. Dr. Cross' historic role will be detailed in a forthcoming article.

Founded in 1929, Battelle is engaged in research, development and commercialization of technological innovation. They specialize in materials science and engineering, life sciences, energy science and national security. Battelle contract operates many of our country's National Laboratories. This includes some of the U.S.'s most sensitive installations such as Oak Ridge, Lawrence Livermore and Brookhaven laboratories. Battelle is headquartered in proximity to Wright Patterson- and remains one of the nation's leading defense contractors. Their metallurgical capabilities and technical talent continue to be recognized as world-class.

Scientific citations, references and report images are also included in this updated edition.

THE DEBRIS AND MEMORY METAL:

The direct connection between the Roswell debris and the Battelle studies is revealed in a material known as Nitinol.

Nitinol is a specially processed combination of Nickel and Titanium, or NiTi. It displays many of the very same properties and physical characteristics as some of the crash debris materials that was reported at Roswell. Both are memory metals that "remember" their original shape and both are extremely lightweight. The materials are reported to have similar color, possess a high fatigue strength and are able to withstand extreme high heat.

Today Nitinol is incorporated in items as far-ranging as medical implants and bendable eyeglass frames. It is produced in many forms including sheet, wire and coil. Newer "intelligent metal" systems are being studied by NASA in the creation of bendable or flappable wings, as self-actuators and as a "self-healing" outer hull "skin" for spacecraft. It is believed that the memory metal found at Roswell came from the outer structures of a downed extraterrestrial spacecraft.

The earliest known combination of Titanium and Nickel reported in the scientific literature was in 1939 by two Europeans. However, this crude sample was a "by-product" of research entirely unrelated to the study of Nitinol. Its "memory metal" potential was not sought or noted. The scientists would have been unable to purify Titanium to sufficient levels at that time-and they would not have known about the energy requirement needed to create the "morphing" effect.

The next time that we see the unique combination of Titanium and Nickel emerge in science is by military scientists associated with Naval Intelligence at the US. Naval Ordnance Lab. It was there that Nitinol was "officially" created in the early 1960s. But Nitinol's "official" history –including the date and reasons for discovery- is conflicting. More on this murky history will be detailed in a future article. Recently gained information suggests that it was in fact Battelle's metallurgist and UFO researcher Dr. Howard Cross who "fed" the US Navy information (including the “phase diagram” and details on Titanium processing) that is required to create Nitinol.

Research by this author has confirmed that Nitinol studies actually began at Battelle immediately after the Roswell crash -and not in the early 1960s. And it was Wright Patterson (the base where the crash material was flown) that contracted this secret work.

This confirmation is given in a brief footnote found in a study by one of Nitinol's "official" inventors at the U.S. Naval Lab. In that military report on Nitinol, the author footnotes a 1949 Battelle study which clearly pertains to the refinement of Titanium and Nickel. The citation relates to a "phase diagram" that examines states of matter and how the two metals could be successfully alloyed. If processed in the right way, the result is Nitinol memory metal. It is possible that the “official” co-inventors of Nitinol were unaware that the memory metal’s impetus was to be found in the study of the Roswell debris- or perhaps not.

Only three other references to this Titanium and Nickel memory metal report by Battelle have ever been found. In each case, they appear only as buried footnotes- and only in metals studies which were themselves conducted under U.S. military auspice. In one case this included having a "Project Monitor" present from Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
A historical analysis of the scientific literature shows that no other alloys had ever been studied by the U.S. military as a potential "memory metal" prior to this late 1940's time frame -and Battelle's Wright Patterson study contract.

Wright Patterson needed Battelle to accomplish this work. Much of the reason for this is because Battelle had something that Wright Patterson did not- an advanced arc furnace that was capable of melting and refining Titanium to the purity required to make memory metal.

The history of Titanium (which is required to make Nitinol) is itself also very revealing. We learn through review of the literature that, according to Encyclopedia Britannica: "After 1947, Titanium changed from a laboratory curiosity to an important structural metal." According to the Industrial Arts Index, the number of science abstracts published on Titanium spiked dramatically from 1946 (and prior years) as compared to abstracts on Titanium written after 1947. In Rand Corporation's 1962 abstract "The Titanium Decade" we learn that: "A far larger Titanium industry arose from the point of view of production capacity than was needed to produce the material that was actually used in aircraft. The time period of 1948-1958 involved virtually all of the costs." An astonishing $2.5 billion (in today's dollars) was spent on Titanium research by the US government in the years immediately following 1947.

THE SCIENTISTS AND THE REPORTS ARE IDENTIFIED

The Battelle memory metal report is titled "Second Progress Report on Contract AF33 (038)-3736" and was completed for Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1949. It is authored by C.M. Craighead, F. Fawn and L.W. Eastwood. It appears to be part of a series of such contracts conducted through the early 1950s. Interestingly, the scientists who authored the report were very closely associated with Battelle's chief Titanium metallurgist (and later, Battelle's UFO researcher for Project Bluebook) Dr. Howard Cross, previously mentioned. The scientists went on to author reports on exotic metallurgy that related to such areas as "metal and superplasticity," "metal transformation," and "metal microstructures."

Based on the sections of the studies that were found that reference this Battelle report- we know that this “progress report” offers the first “phase diagram” ever produced to attempt to successfully alloy Titanium and Nickel. This would be required to make memory metal. We can also infer that it examined refinement of Titanium to high purity levels. High purity Titanium is required to create the shape-recovery effect.

No references have ever been located to something that must surely exist- Battelle's "First Progress Report" on the memory metal. While the Second Progress Report (completed in 1949) refers to techniques to process the alloy, the First Progress Report (authored in 1947 or 1948) probably relates to the actual analysis of "Roswellian" memory metal.

Although Nitinol is not identical to the Roswell debris material, it represents our best attempts at re-creation of the found memory metal. The impetus for this "shape-recovery" metallurgical research has to be the crash debris discovered at Roswell in the summer of 1947.

THE REPORTS ARE MISSING

A year long effort was made by this author to locate Battelle's First and Second Progress Reports on memory metal. Though footnotes have been located to the reports in military sponsored studies on memory metal, access to the actual reports remains impossible.
Battelle's own Historian/Librarian was unable to locate the documents. In a later follow-up call to Battelle, Sarasota Herald Tribune reporter Billy Cox was told that Battelle is still unable to find the report and that it remains a "mystery." Likewise, Wright Patterson Air Force Base's own Archivist and Manager of its Special Collections was unable to locate the documents. Both librarians from each organization worked together to find them. They are baffled and suggest that it may mean that the reports were destroyed (though there is no record of this) or that they may remain highly classified.

The U.S. DOD's Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) is the master repository of our nation's military-sponsored technical reports and studies. Their database also fails to locate the Battelle reports. Finally, with the guidance of reporter Billy Cox, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Secretary of the Air Force/WPAFB was filed by this author. Information has yet to be provided that is responsive to this request.

It is hoped that the Second Progress Report will one day be located. This is because if it does contain "phase diagrams" for the alloying of Nickel and Titanium- it will confirm the work on memory metal. It would strongly suggest that shape-recovery alloys were precisely what Battelle was attempting to create for the military in the time period directly after the Roswell crash. The likelihood that the First Progress Report by Battelle on memory metal will ever be found is even more remote.

CONFIRMATION BY TWO U.S. AIR FORCE GENERALS

In an interview conducted in the 1990's, former Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Brigadier General Arthur Exon confirmed the existence of the Roswell metal reports. Exon, the Base Commander of Wright Patterson in the 1960s, related that he was privy to some of the details on the composition of the crash debris and the variety of tests that were performed on it. Astonishingly, Exon stated of the debris: "It was Titanium and some other metal they knew about, and the processing was somehow different." Of course, special "processing" of Titanium and the “other metal” that “they knew about” (Nickel) is required to create Nitinol.

Exon added tellingly, "And it wouldn't surprise me if the material wasn't still around, certainly the reports are." Exon was likely referring to the Battelle Progress Reports on memory metal done for Wright Patterson in the late 1940's.

General Arthur Exon:

Air Force General George Schulgen (who led Intelligence at the Pentagon at the time of the Roswell incident) authored a previously-marked “secret” draft memo on the flying saucer issue on October 30, 1947- about four months after the crash.

In the verified version of this memo is found a section entitled "Items of Construction." Schulgen instructs his officers to be aware of flying objects and their materials of construction. He specifically notes the "unusual fabrication methods to achieve extreme lightweight" and that the material is of a "composite construction...using various combinations of metals."

Schulgen is describing precisely some of the very characteristics of Nitinol. Just like the Roswell debris material, it is an "extreme lightweight" intermetallic alloy. As a novel "composite construction," it is created by an "unusual fabrication" method that "uses a combination of metals"- perhaps like Titanium and Nickel.

BATTELLE SCIENTIST CONFESSES TO UFO CRASH DEBRIS ANALYSIS

Battelle scientist Elroy John Center has stated that he analyzed metal from a crashed UFO when he was employed by the Institute. Center was a Senior Research Chemist who worked for Battelle for nearly two decades, from 1939 to 1957. This has been confirmed by both his University of Michigan alumni files and by the location of scientific papers that he authored during his employment while at Battelle.

A graduate Chemical Engineer, Center authored papers that appeared in highly technical journals. His areas of research included the chemical testing of metals; the microdetermination of metals in alloys; and the spectroscopic analysis of unique materials. Center was likely involved in early analysis of the Roswell debris. A groundbreaking metals analysis technique that Center developed has been found cited in studies related to the “polygraphic determination of Titanium” in alloys. Specially-selected Titanium is required to create the Roswell-like "memory metal" Nitinol.

Center's family members confirm that he had an intense interest in UFOs and the extraterrestrial. In May of 1992, noted historical researcher Dr. Irena Scott of Columbus, OH (herself a former Battelle scientist) interviewed a close professional associate of Elroy Center. Elroy had privately related to him in June of 1960 that while he was employed at Battelle he had been involved in a very strange laboratory project. Center said that earlier he had been tasked by his superiors to assist on a highly-classified Battelle study that was contracted by the government. He said that the project involved work on a very unusual material. Center understood that this debris material was retrieved by the US government from the earlier crash of a UFO. Center referred to the item he studied as a "piece." He explained that this "piece" was not something with which anyone was familiar. He also said that the debris had been inscribed with strange symbols that he called "glyphics." Similar markings have of course been reported by some of the witnesses to the Roswell crash debris. Center stopped short of providing any further details. The Battelle scientist passed away in 1991.

Nick Pope used to run the British Government's UFO project at the Ministry of Defense. Initially skeptical, his research and investigation into the UFO phenomenon and access to formerly classified government files on the subject soon convinced him that the phenomenon raised important defense and national security issues, especially when the witnesses were military pilots or where UFOs were tracked on radar.

The MOD's UFO Project had also been sent a number of intriguing photos and videos of UFOs, and had the means to have the images enhanced and analysed by various technical specialists. Some intriguing images had arrived via the Scottish Daily Record in 1990, and a poster-sized photograph had been produced from one of the negatives and pinned to my office wall by one of my predecessors. The photograph had been taken in daylight and showed a vast, diamond-shaped UFO, metallic silver in colour, apparently hovering low over the Scottish countryside.
On 15 May 2006, under the Freedom of Information Act, the Ministry of Defence published a formerly secret report on UFOs. Much information about UFOs has already been released, both at the National Archives and on the Ministry of Defence's website. The Freedom of Information Act came fully into force on 1 January 2005 and one of the subjects that is most frequently raised under the legislation is UFOs. There is massive public interest in the phenomenon. But the release of this latest study is different and totally unprecedented. The study was classified 'Secret UK Eyes Only' and only 11 copies of the report were ever made. It ran to over 460 pages and was codenamed 'Project Condign'. Work started in 1996 and the final report was not published until December 2000. The study's findings were sensational but the story behind the study was even more bizarre.

The Ministry of Defence first became involved in the UFO phenomenon in 1950 when the Department's Chief Scientific Adviser, the great radar pioneer Sir Henry Tizard, decreed that UFO sightings should not be dismissed without some form of proper, scientific study. The result was the most splendidly named committee in the history of the civil service, the Flying Saucer Working Party. Their conclusions, set out in a classified report from 1951, were sceptical: UFO sightings were misidentifications, hoaxes or delusions. Consequently, they recommended no further investigations be carried out.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill pressed the Air Ministry for answers in 1952. His letter - available for viewing at the National Archives - says "What does all this stuff about flying saucers amount to? What can it mean? What is the truth? Let me have a report at your convenience". The reply simply restated the party line. UFOs were of no defence significance. But later that year there was a high profile series of UFO encounters involving the RAF. UFOs were tracked on radar. Aircraft were scrambled. Pilots saw UFOs demonstrate speeds and manoeuvres that went far beyond anything the RAF were operating. And some of these mystery objects were filmed on the gun cameras carried on some of our aircraft.

The MOD and the RAF were forced to think again and the sceptical conclusions of the Flying Saucer Working Party were overturned. UFO sightings were to be reported and investigated, but could not be discussed with the media or the public. Guidance was set out in a 1956 document classified Secret. In 1965, in the course of liaison with the Americans, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that UFO sightings were investigated by "our Air Force Technical Intelligence Department". And in a statement that has led to accusations of cover-ups and conspiracies, the document went on to say "Our policy is to play down the subject of UFOs and to avoid attaching undue attention or publicity to it".

The MOD continued to receive reports of UFO sightings. Most were from the public, but some were from police officers, civil pilots or military personnel. The numbers varied. In 1976 we received 200 UFO reports. In 1978 we got 750. I joined the Ministry of Defence in 1985 and in 1991 was posted to the division then responsible for investigating UFO sightings. My brief was to see whether there was evidence of anything of any defence significance - any threat to the territorial integrity of the United Kingdom's Air Defence Region. What I found changed my life forever.

There has always been a sceptic versus believer debate raging at the heart of the Establishment in relation to the UFO phenomenon. Some people in Government thought the whole subject was a waste of time and money, while others thought it was an issue of critical importance. There were some surprising players in all of this. A former Chief of the Defence Staff, Lord Hill-Norton, believed some UFOs were extraterrestrial and that governments were covering up the truth. Former Royal equerry and Deputy Commander in Chief of RAF Strike Command Sir Peter Horsley wrote in his autobiography about an encounter with an alien. "Oh God, how unfortunate that the public will learn that the man who had his finger on the button at Strike Command was seeing little green men" commented a senior officer, anonymously, of course.

During my tour of duty on the UFO project, my conclusions generally mirrored those of my predecessors. Most UFOs could be explained as misidentifications of ordinary objects and phenomena: aircraft lights, weather balloons, satellites, meteors and the planet Venus. But some of the cases on our files were considerably more interesting:

* On 26 December 1980 a UFO landed in Rendlesham Forest next to the United States Air Force bases at Bentwaters and Woodbridge. One of the many military witnesses got close enough to touch the hull and sketch the strange symbols - which he likened to Egyptian hieroglyphs - that he saw on the craft. Indentations were found in the clearing where the UFO had landed and a Geiger counter was used to take radiation readings, subsequently assessed by the MOD's Defence Intelligence Staff as being "significantly higher than the average background". The UFO returned on the following night, when witnesses included the Deputy Base Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt.

* On 30 March 1990 the Belgian Air Force tracked a UFO on radar and scrambled two F-16 fighters, with orders to intercept the UFO. The two aircraft 'locked on' to the UFO with their onboard radars, but the UFO repeatedly broke the lock and a bizarre game of cat and mouse played itself out over the next hour or so. I made enquiries about this with staff at our embassy in Brussels, and was told that the Belgian Government had assessed this event as real - an unknown craft had indeed been involved.

* On 5 November 1990, RAF Tornado aircraft flying over the North Sea were casually overtaken by a UFO. The pilot's report stated "UFO appeared in our right hand side ... we were travelling at Mach point 8. It went into our 12 o'clock and accelerated away. Another 2 Tornados saw it".

* On 30 March 1993 a massive wave of UFO sightings occurred over the UK, culminating in a massive triangular-shaped craft flying over RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury in the Midlands. Witnesses included members of an RAF Police patrol, and a meteorological officer who saw a UFO that he said was several hundred feet in diameter, emitting a low frequency humming sound and firing a narrow beam of light down at the ground. It moved slowly across the countryside before shooting off to the horizon several times faster than an RAF fighter jet.

The MOD's UFO Project had also been sent a number of intriguing photos and videos of UFOs, and had the means to have the images enhanced and analysed by various technical specialists. Some intriguing images had arrived via the Scottish Daily Record in 1990, and a poster-sized photograph had been produced from one of the negatives and pinned to my office wall by one of my predecessors. The photograph had been taken in daylight and showed a vast, diamond-shaped UFO, metallic silver in colour, apparently hovering low over the Scottish countryside. The photograph was removed in 1994 by the then head of the division, who had convinced himself that the picture showed a secret prototype aircraft codenamed Aurora - a hypersonic replacement for the SR-71 Blackbird that the US Government denied existed. A question was asked in Parliament in 1996 about the location of this photograph, and the matter has subsequently been raised in a Freedom of Information Act request. Unfortunately, the photograph had disappeared, and could not be located.

This was the background to Project Condign. For 40 years a debate about UFOs had raged within the MOD and the RAF, with first the sceptics then the believers gaining the upper hand. We needed resolution. We needed a proper, in-depth scientific study that was going to look at all the evidence we'd amassed, and come to a definitive view about the UFO phenomenon. My opposite number in the Defence Intelligence Staff had first discussed this with me in 1993. Like me, he seemed intrigued by some of the UFO cases on our files, and some of our discussions about UFO aerodynamics and propulsion systems were like something from a 'Star Trek' script. Nothing was said openly, but when terrestrial explanations for some UFO cases were eliminated, fingers were pointed suggestively upwards. And whenever the question of UFO occupants was mentioned, the marvellous phrase "these people" was trotted out. "What did he mean 'these people'?" my boss asked me, on the way back from one particularly surreal briefing.

But how were we going to get a study commissioned when so many of our colleagues thought the MOD should drop its UFO investigations altogether - as the United States Air Force had in 1969, when their research programme, Project Blue Book, was closed down. One of our tactics was a simple linguistic sleight of hand - we banned the phrase 'UFO'!

One mention of the phrase 'UFO', and people's prejudices and belief systems kick in, be they sceptics or believers. The term was too emotive and had too much baggage. So we devised 'Unidentified Aerial Phenomena' (UAP) as a replacement, and tried to use this in all internal policy documents, retaining the phrase 'UFO' only for our dealings with the public.

It worked. With the phrase 'UFO' having been quietly dropped, we pushed to get a study approved. To my surprise and delight, given some of the more sceptical voices in the Department, resources were eventually obtained. I assessed the formal proposal, when it arrived, and recommended to my bosses that the study be commissioned. Against my expectation, my recommendation was accepted. However, the project was subsequently delayed, and in 1994 I was promoted and posted to a different section. Accordingly, I played no part in the study and am certainly not - as has been alleged on the internet - its anonymous author.

So what did we get? After four years and 460 pages of analysis, have we solved the UFO mystery? Well, no, we haven't. "That UAP exist is indisputable", the Executive Summary states, before going on to say that no evidence has been found to suggest they are "hostile or under any type of control". What we have is a comprehensive drawing together of some existing research, coupled with some exotic new theories. But by its own admission, the report has not provided a definitive explanation of the phenomenon: "although the study cannot offer the certainty of explanation of all UAP phenomena ..." it says, leaving the door open.

One of the areas that will be most contentious relates to what the report refers to as "plasma related fields". Electrically-charged atmospheric plasmas are credited with having given rise to some of the reports of vast triangular-shaped craft, while the interaction of such plasma fields with the temporal lobes in the brain is cited as another reason why people might feel they were having a strange experience. The problem with this is that there's no scientific consensus here, and as a good rule of thumb one shouldn't try to explain one unknown phenomenon by citing evidence of another. In other words, you can't explain one mystery with another one! That said, the opportunities presented here are recognised and the study recommends further investigation "into the applicability of various characteristics of plasmas in novel military applications".

The report also deals with flight safety issues. There are numerous UFO sightings involving pilots, and the Civil Aviation Authority has records of some terrifying near misses between aircraft and UFOs. In one such case, on 6 January 1995, a UFO came dangerously close to hitting a Boeing 737 with 60 passengers on board, on its approach to Manchester airport. The CAA commended the pilots for reporting the UFO and the official report states that both the degree of risk to the aircraft and the cause were "unassessable". Numerous RAF pilots have seen UFOs too. I have spoken to many such witnesses, not all of whom ever made an official UFO report. Project Condign has an intriguing recommendation when it comes to such aerial encounters: "No attempt should be made to out-manoeuvre a UAP during interception".

This is good news for all those with a serious interest in UFOs. The longest and most comprehensive UFO study ever undertaken in the United Kingdom is published, underpinning the MOD's commitment to the Freedom of Information Act and the principles of open government. Although some parts of the study have been quite properly withheld, as they relate to areas such as the capabilities of radar systems, the media and the public now have an insight into a world that was previously closed to them. The real X-Files have been opened and proof revealed as to just how seriously some of us in government viewed the UFO phenomenon, and how much hard work went into the effort to resolve one of the last great mysteries of our time.

Some commentators recently suggested that interest in UFOs was declining. The publication of this report looks set to reignite the debate and propel the subject back into the spotlight. UFOs - sorry, I mean UAPs - are back!

Astrophysicist Ragbir Bhathal works with SETI to scan the skies for possible communications from extraterrestrial intelligences. Unlike most SETI facilities, which look for radio signals, Bhathal's looks for laser pulses. And now he's found one.

Several years ago Bhathal, a researcher at the University of Western Sydney, suggested that a likely form of extraterrestrial communication would be laser bursts. He set up a facility at his lab which sweeps a nearby volume of space, within about 100 light years, for laser bursts that come in a regular pattern. Any kind of communication would likely be distinguished from background noise by coming in repeated or non-random patterns.

And a few months ago, Bhathal found the kind of regular pattern he's been looking for. He's been analyzing it and seeking a repeat pattern in the same area of space ever since. Though he's cautious about claiming it as a genuine extraterrestrial signal, his discovery has been making local news. Read all about it in The Australian.

AFTER you've spent more than 20 years hunting for an alien signal, you think you'd be celebrating if you noticed a mysterious pulse suddenly rising up on your computer readouts. A regular pulse, amid the random clatter of the cosmos, suggests that someone very smart at the other end is sending a message.

But when Ragbir Bhathal, an astrophysicist at the University of Western Sydney, who teaches the only university-based course on SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) in Australia, detected the suspicious signal on a clear night last December, he knew better than to crack open the special bottle of champagne he has tucked away for the history-making occasion.

Instead, he's spent the past few months meticulously investigating whether the unrecognised signature was caused by a glitch in his instrumentation, a rogue astrophysical phenomenon, or some unknown random noise.

Even if he picks up the signal again - he's been scouring the same co-ordinates of the night sky on an almost daily basis since - the scientific rule book dictates he'll need to get it peer-reviewed before he can take his announcement to the world. "And that is a lot of ifs," he concedes.

The hunt for extraterrestrial life has been boosted recently by the discovery last month of a rocky world not unlike our own, about 20 light years away, which its Swiss discoverers have dubbed Gliese 581e, the latest in a long line of planet discoveries during the past decade (350 and counting).

Although Gliese 581e is too close to its host sun to support life, it's the first planet believed to be rocky like our own, a kind of super-hot Earth quite unlike the long line of gas and ice giants discovered to date.

With the launch of NASA's Kepler space telescope in March, specifically designed to detect smaller Earth-like planets, astronomers are confident that the discovery of a blue planet, orbiting in the so-called Goldilocks zone, where liquid water can support life, is edging closer by the day. But it will still be up to ground-based telescopes to confirm the mass of the planet, as space-based telescopes such as the Kepler can only yield its approximate diameter.

The quest of SETI astronomers, however, is not just for the discovery of an Earth-like planet but for life intelligent enough to transmit meaningful signals across vast stretches of space. For more than 40 years, they have been doggedly searching for alien transmissions via radio telescope, tracking tens of millions of radio signals across different sections of the night sky, but so far the results have been, by any scientific standard, dismal.

There has been a handful of false alarms - the detection of short, intense bursts of electromagnetic energy that might be transmitted by an advanced civilization - but these have been later shown to be caused by other cosmic phenomena, such as quasars.

The belief that an alien civilization might also be listening to our television and radio signals has also been dashed by the recent discovery that the signals don't, as once thought, reach into deep space: they eventually become so weak that they disappear in the roar of the electromagnetic noise.

That is partly why the OZ OSETI (o for optical) project and a handful of its US counterparts have turned to laser pulse technology in what is the most ambitious effort yet to detect a signal from an alien species. "For an advanced civilization, radio wave technology would be old hat," Bhathal says. "My strong feeling is that if there are (extraterrestrial intelligence) civilizations out there, they will send the signal by laser pulses or laser flashes."

In 2000, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, a former patron of the Australian SETI project, advised Bhathal to "let the better spectrum, light" drive his search for ET. Bhathal's OZ OSETI project is the only dedicated project for searching for ET in the optical spectrum in the southern hemisphere.

"NASA is already using lasers for space communication and it's not unrealistic to imagine that an extraterrestrial intelligence might be using them as well," Bhathal says.

"In terms of Earth technology today, we have achieved a maximum of 1015 watts of laser power for a brief period, butan advanced civilization could have lasers with powers of 1025." He admits, however, that our failure to pick up any interstellar signals so far could mean that advanced civilizations are using a communications technique still not discovered on Earth.

"It is risky to judge everything by our own technology," he says.

The search field of the OZ OSETI project is 100 light years from Earth: a short walk around the block in galactic terms, but an area large enough to contain at least 1000 stars and possibly 20 times as many planets.

While the discovery of worlds outside our solar system has given weight to the idea that the universe may be teeming with life - albeit sprinkled across an incomprehensibly wide area - it's the key cosmic numbers that have astronomers in disagreement.

For example, how often do the magic ingredients for life - a rocky planet, located at just the right distance from its sun at justthe right moment in the sun's life - come together?

If the answer is very often, there ought to be lots of planets like our own, and life may be more the rule than a miraculous accident. In 1960, Frank Drake, now a professor of astronomy at the University of Southern California, estimated that there could be up to a million technological civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy alone. But Bhathal believes "we are nowhere near being able to put a sensible figure on how common life may be".

What we do know is that our sun is a perfectly ordinary star in a rotating island of 100 billion stars, the Milky Way galaxy, which in turn is just one of 100 billion or so galaxies in the observable universe. The laws of mathematics weigh heavily in favour of the idea that we are not alone. Moreover, the discovery of more than 300 planets suggests that solar systems such as ours may not be all that unusual. It's very likely that smaller and rockier worlds are more common than the gas giants, which are easier to find because of the greater wriggle they exert in a star's path.

"The low-mass planets are much harder to find because they have a smaller Doppler amplitude," says Chris Tinney of the department of astrophysics at the University of NSW. "It might also mean we are not looking in the right way. But we're now certain that low-mass planets are more common. The Kepler space telescope will no doubt help usfind them."

Tinney explains that while the basic techniques for detecting planets have been around for some time, what's revolutionized the field has been the dramatic technological improvements in spectrograph and telescopic power.

"Planet searching has now become a sexy field and private donors in the US are putting money into it," Tinney says.

Other satellite projects such as the Allen telescope array, named after Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who donated $US13million towards its creation, are also coming online. The array uses an incredible 350 satellite dishes to scan the sky for the faint whisper of radio signals from celestial objects such as quasars.

There's also the hardware already in space if ET happens to be passing through our neighbourhood. The Pioneer 10 spacecraft, launched in 1972, included an aluminum plate with human figures, a drawing of the planets and an outline of the spacecraft's course. The last, extremely weak signal from this surprisingly robust spacecraft was received in 2006. If it's still around, Pioneer 10 would now be hurtling somewhere in the interstellar void outside our solar system.

With the discovery of more planets, the relatively new science of exobiology, dedicated to the study of extraterrestrial life, has gained the gleam of scientific respectability.

But the field is still trying to overcome the UFO stigma, laments Ain de Horta, a project scientist with the Australian SETI Institute.

"There are still those in the scientific community who look down their noses at us, but that's increasingly unusual these days. There's a growing recognition that this is important science, with the potential to answer one of the most fundamental questions facing humanity. Those who lump us in with the UFO nuts tend not to be scientists," says de Horta.

"We're counting on the physics being the same elsewhere in the universe."

De Horta's institute is, in collaboration with CSIRO's Parkes telescope, scouring radio waves in its search for ET.

"If an alien civilization has developed technology it's likely to be based on most ofthe same principles as our own. Like us, forexample, they would have discovered radio waves."

Even so, de Horta concedes, life elsewhere in the universe might resemble nothing we know on Earth. It could be moulded by different chemistries, different gravity and different climatic environments.

In any case, it's highly unlikely we'll ever have a face-to-face meeting, as space travel even at Star Trek's warp drive wouldn't get us there in less than thousands of years. A two-way conversation would take decades. And even for that to happen, says de Horta, we would need intelligent life to be reaching its technological prime at the same time as ours and transmitting radio waves at a wavelength that we can detect.

"The whole argument about communication hinges on the longevity of a species and their use of a technology that is recognizable to us," he says.

What all the planet hunters and SETI have in common is a white-hot passion for discovering alien worlds. Bhathal knows that the odds of finding anything are long and the area he is scanning, as big as it is, may still not be extensive enough to yield anything, but he's determined to keep his eyes on the sky.

"There (have) to be other Earth-like worlds. Otherwise what do we have? A whole lot of wasted space."

commit the ultimate act of openness and transparency and to do it immediately
before this truth embargo becomes its embargo…”
Mr. Bassett went on to say, “If they choose not to disclose by the end of May and
wait … there is a very real possibility… that another nation will
in fact act proactively on their own and disclose the extraterrestrial presence
and they will wake up and they will pick up the Washington Post or the Washington
Times and the headline will read, ‘President Sarkozy of France today will
tell the French people about the confirmation of the extraterrestrial
presence’ and provide evidence from the French military files and we will
follow and they will lead. That’s what’s at issue today. I think
it’s a pretty big issue.”
Mr. Bassett also specified that if the Obama administration
fails to disclose, he and the substantial PRG resources would launch a major
media campaign that would include extensive documentation of the Clinton
administration’s knowledge of the UFO/ET matter through what is now known
as the Rockefeller
Initiative. The Rockefeller Initiative covers documentation from 1993 to
1996 and includes over 50 letters and memos clearly illustrating the Clinton
White House administration’s involvement in the UFO/ET matter.

by any investigative main stream media outlet, would prove beyond any doubt
that the UFO/ET matter has been discussed and analyzed at the highest possible

Famed NASA Astronaut confirms Extraterrestrials are here

STS-80 Lift off from Pad 39B
Space Shuttle Columbia during STS-80 took a crew of five astronauts into a 17 day, 15 hour and 54 minute mission around the earth, the longest flight in the history of this vehicle. During this lengthy flight a very strange event occurred that even had crewman Dr. Story Musgrave unable to explain what he observed from the shuttle windows.

A large disc shaped object appeared below the Columbia. The shuttle was approximately, 190 Nautical miles high.

The disc was first observed to miraculously appear from out of nowhere, flying through the clouds below and progressing from right to left as the astronauts stared in utter amazement. The outer rim of the craft appeared to be rotating counter-clockwise. It was very large (compared to common space junk and breakaway ice), approximately 50 to 150 feet in diameter.

Astronaut Dr. Story Musgrave, a Payload Specialist on the STS-80 Mission, was interviewed following the flight. As he viewed a videotape of the incident which showed lightning flashes in the atmosphere, the city lights of Denver, Colorado and other earthbound sights, he stated: "I don't know what it is. Whether it's a washer, debris, ice particles, I don't know. But it's characteristic of the thousands of things which I've seen. What is not so characteristic is it appears to come from no where. You would think that if it's facing the dark side or facing a side towards you which is not reflecting the sun, you would think that you would see something there. It's really impressive."

Story Musgrave (STS-80)

During an earlier interview, Dr. Musgrave stated he attempted to communicate with ET life forms during each of his six missions. He actually asked them to take him with them. Now that's an astronaut with a lot of courage. Dr. Musgrave retired after this flight from NASA. Since then he's been spreading his considered opinion that alien life exists. When Musgrave speaks of this, it's no great leap for one to assume he's admitting knowledge of alien life. As the final slide of a "Grey" ET was shown during a recent astronomy presentation by Dr. Musgrave, he made this surprising comment: "These guys are real... I guarantee it!" Dr. Musgrave does know the truth. This author guarantees it!

Consider that carefully. These are world renown scientists making statements almost beyond belief. Dr. von Braun and others of his stature have the courage to disclose "sensitive" information, but obviously the leaders of the USA and the world do not. If billions could find a way of coping with the overwhelming threat of atomic annihilation for half a century, it is reasonable to assume we can cope with the knowledge of these "Other Intelligence's" from the stars. Governments Should Declare UFOs Exist, Says Researcher

For years, governments around the world have been very careful to keep information gathered about Unidentified Flying Objects out of the public eye.

But finally this February, the Canadian government opened thousands of federal records covering UFO sightings between 1947 and the early 1980s. France, Britain, Chile, Russia and Denmark have also opened their files to some degree to the public.

Britain, which released its first batch of “X files” the day after the Vatican astronomer declared in May 2008 that extraterrestrial life is “part of creation,” will release more records over the next four years.

With this momentum, Alberta UFO researcher and author Jim Moroney says the time has come for governments to go one step further and make a pronouncement that UFOs do indeed exist.

“To reduce rumours and misinformation and to frame single or multiple UFO events, it would be advisable to announce that UFO’s exist as early as possible,” says Moroney, an instructor at the University of Calgary and author of The New Bridge – Planning for the Extraterrestrial Presence.

“I am convinced that it is time for us to make a considerable effort to lift the veil of fear and uncertainty about this subject and develop an appropriate response,” he says.

While the release of the files is “a good start,” Moroney says governments now need to “develop a more concrete strategic plan to effectively deal with the increasing UFO activity and the public’s corresponding increase in demands for accurate, reliable, and truthful information.”

While it is widely surmised that the reason governments keep UFO records secret is to avoid widespread panic, Moroney, who has a background in science and is executive director for the Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association, says that’s not likely to happen. In fact, withholding information could even be counter-productive.

“From our work with disaster planning, the evidence shows that public panic is rare and most rare when people have been candidly informed,” he says.

“There is no sound scientific basis for withholding information about the UFO phenomenon from the public. In fact the evidence shows that the longer officials withhold any worrisome information, the more frightening the information will seem when it is revealed, especially when it is revealed by an outside source.”

The 9,000-plus Canadian files are different from those of other countries in that they don't only list UFO sightings but also include analyses and inter-departmental meetings of Canadian officials on the issue.

While Washington is still keeping its UFO records tight to its chest, ufologists are hopeful that President Barack Obama’s "change agenda” will soon result in the country’s huge UFO archives being released to the world.

In an interview on Larry King Live, American UFO expert Peter Davenport called it “encouraging” that some countries are opening up their UFO files, and said he hopes the U.S. government will allow those in senior positions who have been sworn to secrecy to speak publicly about what they know.

"I would look to the United States now to do the same [as other countries], and what I would like to see is somebody senior in the U.S. government, in the military and intelligence communities, say to its people, ‘If you know anything about the UFO phenomenon you are free to talk to the press and to the American public.’ That would solve the problem in a hurry.”

Moroney, who has been researching UFOs for over 20 years, says keeping the public out of the loop is “appallingly short-sighted.”

“UFO communication messages must include information about what the public can do. The public is entitled to information that affects their lives and their families. Explaining what individuals can do will empower them to participate in activities that may be beneficial to improving our understanding of the phenomenon.”

A memo in the Canadian files details a UFO sighting at Shag Harbour, Newfoundland, witnessed by an RCMP officer and six civilians on the night of October 4, 1967.

The memo describes how the witnesses reported seeing an object “60 feet in length, moving in an easterly direction before it descended rapidly into the water, making a bright splash on impact…. A single white light appeared on the surface of the water for a short period of time.”

In the U.S., one of the most remarkable sightings was the so-called “Pheonix lights wave” of 1997, in which a craft estimated to be a mile in length, along with some smaller UFOs, moved over the state of Nevada and was witnessed by thousands.

Apollo 14 veteran Dr. Edgar Mitchell, who in 1971 became the sixth man to walk on the moon, told a British radio station in July 2008 that Earth is being visited by alien beings and “the UFO phenomenon is real, though it has been covered up by our governments for a very long time.”

Mitchell referred to the famous Roswell incident of 1947 in which it is believed that the U.S. Government covered up the crash and subsequent salvage of an alien craft and the beings it carried.

However, Mitchell said that with public awareness of UFOs increasing, there are fewer efforts by governments to engage in cover ups and misinformation. He added that he thinks “we are heading towards a major disclosure” on UFOs.

“It is no longer a question of when will humanity interact with extraterrestrials, but rather the much more difficult question of how they have decided to interact with us,” Moroney says.

Ontario is the New Hotspot for UFO Sightings

On Aug. 4, 1977, Paul Shishis was just a regular teenager working at a Scarborough grocery store.

But, it was no ordinary evening shift. He remembers that day well.

That Thursday night, he said, out in an adjacent open field, the 18-year-old saw what most people encounter only in science-fiction movies: a pear-shaped unidentified flying object with rotating multi-coloured lights in the night sky.

“I was dumbstruck with what I was witnessing,” Mr. Shishis said, now 48 and living in Oshawa.

Mr. Shishis’ experience is recorded alongside thousands of Canadian sightings, and the recent recounting of his story comes at a time when many continue to pose the elusive age-old question: Are we alone in the universe? This year marks the 60th anniversary of the crash landing in Roswell, New Mexico, where some believe the U.S. military covered up evidence of an alien craft.

And this weekend, Edmonton’s TELUS World of Science, a respected museum complex, hosted a two-day UFO conference exploring the possibility of intelligent alien life.

For some, the possibility of alien beings visiting Earth is hard to swallow, the stuff of science fiction along the lines of the X-Files and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

But one independent Canadian UFO investigator said mysterious sightings in Ontario appear to be on the rise, with this year potentially seeing record numbers.

Brian Vike, who runs HBCC UFO Research from Houston, B.C, records Canadian incidents with the help of a British website.

They reported about 150 Ontario sightings so far this year up to the end of August out of a rough total of 300 in Canada.

Compare that with 188 Ontario sightings in all of 2006, according to another count that also includes Mr. Vike’s numbers, the Canadian UFO Survey, and the results could be surprising, he said.

“You’re going to have a record-breaking year, no doubt about it,” he said.

The Canadian UFO Survey is tabled by leading UFOlogists Chris Rutkowski, who spoke at the Edmonton conference, and Geoff Dittman, perhaps providing the clearest snapshot of Canadian sightings.

B.C. used to be the UFO magnet of Canada. According to last year’s survey, B.C. beat Ontario in sightings despite having a smaller population.

In 2002, B.C. logged 176 sightings. Ontario had 128. And the next year, it was even more lopsided: 304 to 150.

But, so far his year, up to the end of August, B.C. only has half of Ontario’s numbers, at 81 sightings, according to Mr. Vike.

Mr. Vike said he’s at a loss to explain it. He said several sightings were spotted near the Pickering nuclear plant.

“Is it something that’s attracting them? Is it something like the great bodies of water that you have?” After all, Mr. Shishis said he saw the UFO hover over what he believed to be Pickering that August night.

Ottawa is tied in eighth place in the number of municipal sightings with Edmonton and Burnaby, 12, according to the 2006 survey.

The No. 1 municipality attracting UFOs? Maidstone, Sask.

Whatever the reason for higher Ontario numbers, many experts say that Canada lacks a centralized database for sightings.

That means no accurate count exists.

“We really need to have a better way for people to report and making people aware of the proper channel of reporting these things. It would be great if there was a centralized thing,” said Frank Florian, director of space sciences at the TELUS World of Science.

“A lot of people who report these things don’t want to be labelled as quacks and things like that. They just want a question answered. Sometimes if you bring up the word ‘UFO,’ most people just kind of laugh or scoff at it,” he said.

And some don’t know where to turn to or are too embarrassed to say they saw a UFO.

“Most sightings don’t get reported. Its very hard to get a handle of what’s going on, because we don’t hear about most of the cases,” said Stanton Friedman, a former nuclear physicist who was the original civilian investigator for the Roswell incident.

Mr. Friedman, 73, at first blush doesn’t seem like a man who believes in UFOs. In fact, he’s never even seen one.

“I’ve never seen Tokyo. Do I have to see it to believe it’s there?” he asked rhetorically.

Mr. Friedman once worked as a nuclear physicist for engineering giants like General Electric, General Motors and McDonnell Douglas. He now calls New Brunswick home.

“I’m convinced the evidence is overwhelming that planet Earth is being visited by intelligently controlled extra-terrestrial spacecraft,” said Mr. Friedman, who was a guest speaker at the Edmonton conference. “We have sightings by scientist and by astronomers. There’s a tremendous amount of evidence out there.” Sometimes, the UFOs can be explained as the International Space Station, planes, even stars, Mr. Vike said.

“Let me tell you, we get hoaxes, lots of them. But you try to sort it out the best you can,” he said.

As for the Roswell incident, which he calls “cosmic Watergate,” Mr. Friedman believes the U.S. military did recover a flying saucer.

Asked if the truth about Roswell would someday be revealed, he said “if some major newsgroup would spend as much effort blowing the lid of the cosmic Watergate as the Washington Post did on the political Watergate, sure.”

October 1982: A few months after Spielberg screened the movie E.T. for President and Mrs. Reagan, Reagan and the last man to walk on the moon, Apollo Astronaut Harrison Schmitt, arrive on the tarmac at the Roswell Industrial Air Center, formally known as the Roswell Army Air Base. Moments after this picture was taken Reagan spoke near the hanger were rumor has it the alien bodies were taken following the 1947 crash. In his speech Reagan made reference to "E.T": the extraterrestrial. Some believe Reagan's action was an indicator of his strong interest in the subject.

A Young Steven Spielberg Meets the President

On June 27, 1982, a year after Reagan entered the White House, Ronald Reagan made one of his most famous alien remarks when he hosted Steven Spielberg in the White House. Spielberg was at the White House to present a private screening of his soon to be released movie called "ET: The Extraterrestrial." The movie dealt with a young extraterrestrial who becomes stranded on earth and struggles to return, while U.S. government agents try to capture him.

Movies were a big part of Reagan’s life before he became President, and he spent a lot of time while President watching movies either in the White House theater, or on the weekends at Camp David. White House records list 377 movies that Ron and Nancy Reagan had been shown. These included most of the Star Trek movies, and most of Steven Spielberg movies. In fact, two days before Spielberg arrived in Washington for the special screening of "E.T." The Reagans watched Spielberg’s fictional ghost movie "Poltergeist."

Along with the Reagans and Spielberg, 35 people were invited to the special screening. Included in the list of distinguished guests was Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. The event started with a reception in the Blue Room where the Reagans met with the invited guests. From there the group moved to the Red Room where the Presidential party had dinner. At 8:22 p.m., in the White House Theater the movie E.T. began.

The movie was one that moved the Reagans. "Nancy Reagan was crying towards the end, Spielberg recalled, "and the President looked like a ten-year-old-kid."

Following the screening the President leaned over, clapped Spielberg on the shoulder, and quietly commented, "You know, there aren’t six people in this room who know how true this really is." Unfortunately, the sudden press of people approaching Spielberg and the President, prevented Spielberg from pursuing the strange comment made by Reagan.

Spielberg stated that he had written the E.T. story as fiction based upon facts drawn from various UFO stories that had been told over the years. He must have been very shocked to hear from the President that it was all very true.
There were also rumors around that the government had some input into "E.T." such as in how the alien was to be portrayed. In Spielberg’s 1977 "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" the aliens had been presented as thin childlike beings with large heads. (similar to accounts given by abductees) In "E.T." the alien had changed. It was now portrayed like a creature unheard of in any UFO account, even though it was built by the same person who had built the Close Encounter aliens. No explanation was given as to why the alien image was being changed.

Donald Duck. Spielberg stated he intended to create "a creature only a mother could love."

Rumors, however, abounded that someone inside the government had told Spielberg that the alien model used in "Close Encounters" was too close to the truth, and the model had to be changed. The accusation was never proved and Spielberg has never commented on it.

Spielberg told the story of Reagan's "how true this is" comment to Hollywood television producer Jamie Shandera shortly after the incident occurred. This occurred while Shandera was helping a Japanese film crew who were making a documentary on Spielberg.

This author wrote to Spielberg in January 1988 to confirm the story, but the letter was cut off by Spielberg’s publicity coordinator Kris Kelley who stated "unfortunately, Mr. Spielberg is currently away working on his next project and is unable to personally answer your question." Another researcher, Linda Howe who worked as a documentary film producer and author, also tried to interview Spielberg about his Reagan encounter without success.

Florida Today reporter Billy Cox also made an attempt to confirm the Spielberg story. He phoned Spielberg and ended up talking with Spielberg publicist Marvin Levy. Levy stated that "Mr. Spielberg does not wish to discuss any private conversation held with the President."

The White House files documented the thank-you letters sent from the White House to Spielberg. On July 12, 1982, President Reagan signed a letter addressed to Spielberg which stated,

Nancy and I want you to know how much we enjoyed seeing ‘E.T.’ It is truly a film classic and you are to be congratulated for your splendid work . . . we appreciate your sharing ‘E.T.’ with us . . .

Even more interesting in White House records found concerning the Spielberg screening of E.T. were records which showed a strange coincidence concerning the very next event on the Presidents schedule after the movie screening.

The showing of E.T. was the last event on June 27th. The very next event the next morning, June 28th, was a meeting between President Reagan and James A. Baker 111, Chief of Staff; Edwin Meese 111, Counselor; and Michael K. Deaver, Deputy Chief of Staff; met in the oval office. From there the four men went to the highly secure White House Situation Room where the President participated in a briefing of the U.S. Space Program. Participants included six members of the National Security Council or National Security Affairs and no one from NASA.

The absence of anyone from NASA for a briefing of the U.S. Space Program is unheard of. The absence of any NASA people is even more unusual, in light of the fact that a couple days later, President Reagan attended the landing of the U.S. Space Shuttle at Edwards Air Force Base.

The White House files also documented the thank-you letters sent from the White House to Spielberg. On July 12, 1982, President Reagan signed a letter addressed to Spielberg which stated,

"Nancy and I want you to know how much we enjoyed seeing ‘E.T.’ It is truly a film classic and you are to be congratulated for your splendid work . . . we appreciate your sharing ‘E.T.’ with us . . . "

Spielberg went on to show E.T. to the United Nations where he was introduced by Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, who would have his own dramatic UFO experience a couple years later. (complete story) Spielberg was presented the UN Peace medal by de Cuellar.

On December 9, Spielberg traveled to England where he screened the movie for Queen Elizabeth and to Prince Phillip, who was like Reagan, a UFO enthusiast .

Reagan Goes to Roswell

A couple months later, probably still inspired by the E.T. movie, President Reagan showed up in Roswell, New Mexico to give a speech for the re-election of Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. Schmitt was a Republican Senator from New Mexico who as an Apollo 17 astronaut was the last man to walk on the moon.

Schmitt, like Reagan was interested in the UFO phenomena. Like Reagan, Schmitt had publicly played both the investigator and the agnostic. On a positive note Schmitt declared, "If the government has any information on UFO's, it should be released to the public -- barring anything that might affect national security. We ought to be involved in a search to find out if there's any good evidence that UFOs really are spacecraft that are being piloted by extraterrestrial beings." Playing the conservative politician Schmitt stated, "The existence of intelligent life elsewhere in our universe is highly probable, given the huge number of sun-like stars that exist out there. That such life would visit our star and planet, however, is unlikely, but not impossible given the large number of choices it would have for such a visit. Further, the so-called UFOs have not done a very good job of communicating for life (that's) intelligent enough to travel between stars."

Schmitt’s actions spoke very strongly towards his interest in solving the UFO mystery. In 1979 during the peek wave of cattle mutilations Schmitt gathered together 200 policemen, cattlemen, investigators, FBI agents, and media men from 11 western states in Albuquerque for the only official investigation into the cattle mutilation phenomena. No solution to the problem was reached by the gathering, but only a few days later the justice Department offered money for an investigation.

Even more spectacular was Senator Schmitt’s involvement a year later in the case of Paul Bennewitz, an Albuquerque businessman who had contacted Kirkland Air Force base, USAF intelligence, and President Reagan about his claim that he was monitoring a base of aliens operating in the center of the Jicarilla Reservation in Northern New Mexico. On November 10 Bennewitz was invited to the Kirkland Air Force base to present his findings to a small group of officers and scientists. A week later, agent Richard Doty Bennewitz that the Air Force Office of Special Investigation (AFOSI) had decided against further consideration of the matter.

At this point Senator Schmitt involved himself in the case asking Doty asking what AFOSI was planning to do about Bennewitz's allegations. When informed that no investigation was planned, Schmitt spoke with Brig. Gen. William Brooksher of base security.

In this light, it came as no surprise that the re-election rally for Schmitt should be at the location of the most popular UFO story of the century, and that Reagan brought up the subject of extraterrestrials in his speech. Reagan began his speech

It feels good to be here in the land of enchantment and far away from a place of disenchantment on the banks of the Potomac. Jack (Schmitt), are you sure you want to go back there? [Laughter] Of course, having once been an astronaut, Jack Schmitt is probably the only one who feels at home there; because Washington is in orbit most of the time about one thing or another. [Laughter]

You know, when he was first elected he Senate, he probably thought that, like E.T., [A character in the movie ``E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial.''] he had landed on another planet. He was one of the few among those alien big spenders, big taxers, who was working to bring economic order to our nation.

More important than the alien comments made by President Reagan, was the place that he made them - the Roswell Industrial Air Center - formally known as the Walker Air Force Base. It was at this base in 1947 where the wreckage and bodies of the Roswell flying saucer were rumored to have been taken from the crash outside of town.

Furthermore, Reagan made his speech near Hanger 84, which was the rumored hanger that was used to store UFO wreckage and/or bodies in July 1947. Like his famous speech at the Berlin wall where Reagan asked Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," the speech at the Roswell Hanger where the UFO mystery began was typical Reagan symbolism.

Will you please tell me what you make of this photo? On March 18 at just past 7 a.m., my two children and I were heading to London, Ontario, south along highway 23. My son took this picture out of the window from the back seat of our car.

Many pictures were taken, with this object showing up in only this one shot. No planes, etc, were noticed along the drive.

Your opinion is greatly appreciated. I've witnessed UFOs before, and would like to know if we've captured one on camera.

Soul Survivor - Dan Aykroyd on UFOs

Unless it is a very convincing joke, Dan Aykroyd most definitely believes in the existence of UFOs. We get on to the subject and his eyes start doing something strange. They bulge from his head, as if to punctuate his thoughts. And they are strange thoughts. "There's this one website I go on a lot," he says, "that just ends all debate about whether they're real or not, and that's Mufon.com."

Aykroyd is the "Hollywood consultant" for Mufon (it stands for Mutual UFO Network), which seems to involve keeping abreast of developments in the UFO-sighting world and promoting the organisation. "Basically, [Mufon are] scientists from all kinds of disciplines that have formed this group to analyse what is real and what is a hoax. Now you could say every one of them is a fake - that footage of 200 whirling white dots in the sky, or the Phoenix Lights [a series of lights seen over Phoenix, Arizona, in 1997] - which 17,000 people saw - the Tinley Park sightings in Illinois, where whole suburbs saw these triangles and wedges go over at three miles an hour. Is it a mass hallucination? If so, why is it appearing on digital cameras and film? They're coming and going like taxis."

I wasn't sure about bringing up the UFOs so soon because it makes Aykroyd seem so, well, odd, and that's not the way he comes across. Or not entirely. He certainly has his eccentricities, and I don't just mean the physical oddities to which he has drawn attention in the past: he has webbed toes and eyes of different colours, one brown and one green. He wears his black motorcycle boots everywhere, even on the beach (perhaps because of the webbed toes?) and he is wearing them today, providing an edge to his suit. He always carries his police badge on him, from his time as a reserve officer for the Harahan police department in Louisiana; he pulls the badge out of his jacket pocket to show me. But he is also gentle (he is a man who can fill an armchair - it makes me want to give him a cuddle), articulate, serious even, and doesn't lack self-awareness.

Before meeting Aykroyd in the empty bar of a London hotel, I watched a programme he did last year in which he was interviewed for an hour and a half about aliens by a "ufologist" called David Sereda. At the end of it, Sereda earnestly described the actor as "one of the greatest minds in our world at this time" and Aykroyd had the grace to look slightly embarrassed. The whole thing could be a long-running joke, perhaps an attempt to keep people interested in his films Ghostbusters and Coneheads, but it's a lot of trouble to go to just to promote old movies. Does he really believe it? "I do, absolutely, and I'm not alone." He is very serious.

So why are they here? "There's that old theory that humankind and this planet were seen as the centre of the universe. That was thrown away - how could we be so presumptuous? Well, I subscribe to that. I think we are the centre of the universe and that is why they're coming. They're visiting because this is the planet that produced Picasso, the atom bomb, penicillin ... there are so many advances in science, art and culture." But if they are able to travel here, surely they are more advanced than us? "Oh, they have technology better than ours, but they didn't paint like Renoir, they don't dance like Mick Jagger, they don't write like Samuel Johnson or William Faulkner. They are envious of us. We have the most beautiful planet - the Rockies, the purple fields of the United States, the Lake District, the Pyrenees, the turquoise seas of the tropics. They don't have that. They may have gelatinous pools and crystal mountains and they've got the technology to flip from planet to planet or dimension to dimension but, you know, Keith Richards didn't come from there." I'm not so sure about that last bit. Does he think there are aliens living here, among us? "I think there are possibly some hybrids here. I think many are here for good purposes and want to improve our planet but I think some are here for malevolent purposes." Like what? "Probably extracting sperm and ova, or taking cow's lips and anuses for delicacies, being cruel to animals, that kind of thing."

Aliens and cow anuses. I could talk to Aykroyd about this for hours and so could he, probably, if he was certain I was taking him seriously. But on to more mundane pursuits. Aykroyd is in London to scout out a location for the first UK branch of the House of Blues, the music venue and restaurant chain he co-founded. His band, the Blues Brothers, still perform at the opening of every new club, even though he sold the company last year (Aykroyd has a strong entrepreneurial streak - he remains as a consultant for the House of Blues, has a winery, and imports an expensive brand of tequila into his native Canada). The other reason he is here is to promote his new film, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, in which a widowed firefighter, Larry, persuades his womanising friend Chuck (Adam Sandler) to pretend they are having a relationship and register a civil partnership so as to provide financial protection for his children. It has received terrible reviews, with critics complaing about tired, hateful "jokes" about dropping the soap in the shower, vague racism and Sandler as an unlikely sex symbol.

Aykroyd, always likable, puts in a good show as the fire captain, but is this what his career has come to? Now 55, he was influential as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, had success with the Blues Brothers film and band, was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Driving Miss Daisy and wrote and starred in several hit films including Ghostbusters. But in recent years, his career hasn't looked so good: he appeared in the sequel Blues Brothers 2000, which flopped, and took small parts in films including Pearl Harbor and 50 First Dates.

I think I have irritated him. "I went as far as one could go in the business - I wrote seven movies and got them made, and starred in them and produced them. It's impossible to maintain because a new generation comes up and one has to relinquish one's position. There are new stars, new types of humour, new directors and writers and they're referencing other things, so for me to sit and home and moan that the phone isn't ringing, that's not my style. I've had 30-plus years in this business, an amazing run, and I think now it's time for the new generation to come up. The torch has been passed to Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and one day the time will come for them to pass the torch. I get offered things where they want a good character performance. I've actually turned down six movies in the last year because between the expansion of House of Blues, my schedule with the band, the tequila, the wine business, and raising three kids and maintaining a marriage of 25 years [he has three daughters with the actor Donna Dixon], I don't have much time to be away any more."

Aykroyd founded the Blues Brothers nearly 30 years ago with his friend John Belushi and the band is still going 25 years after the latter's death from an accidental drug overdose. Belushi, the wild one in the partnership, had been a drug addict for several years and died at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles, after injecting heroin and cocaine. Did Aykroyd feel there was more he could have done? "I poured a lot of coke down the toilet. His wife and I hid a lot of vials or crushed them. We did everything we could but ultimately he was very wily and we're all captains of our own ship. There wasn't much we could do if he was determined to get his hands on it. He would run away or get really mad at us. This was before the time of the active intervention that you see today. We did try to get an intervention together but he bolted from the room. The last night I saw him alive, he was getting into a white limousine headed to Jersey with a coke dealer. I wasn't enough to attract him away from that." He thinks for a minute. "Of course I feel bad about it but I can't lay too much guilt on myself."

For a long time, he found Belushi's death extremely hard to deal with. "It stopped me dead. I was 29, he was 33, we had a hit record, hit movie, everything laid out before us. It sent me into a mode of abandonment of safety - I drove my motorcycle faster than I should have, I did a lot of partying, I hung out with people I shouldn't, but then ultimately I came round and realised I had something to give, I had a contribution to make, so I went on and did some of my best work after he died."

It was his parents (his father was a civil engineer, his mother a secretary) who started Aykroyd on the acting path by enrolling him at an improvisational class. They didn't particularly want him to be an actor, they just thought it would help calm their hyperactive son - he had been expelled from two schools for acting up and a psychiatrist had diagnosed mild Asperger's syndrome, a condition on the autism spectrum, because Aykroyd had a few tics and had shown signs of obsessive compulsive disorder.

His early experience would later come in useful when Aykroyd joined Second City, the improvisation comedy troupe, where his contemporaries included John Candy, Eugene Levy and Bill Murray. For a while, his mother, especially, had hoped he might become a priest: Aykroyd had been educated in a seminary for four years ("the Catholic school board had a better system of education at that time"), but they sent his parents a letter saying Aykroyd was not a suitable candidate. "They were disappointed because I had to find a new high school, but I was totally relieved. I'd make a bad preacher. I could sound good, acting it out, but who am I to tell other people how to live their lives?"

It was in Ottawa, where Aykroyd grew up, that he discovered the blues. "There was a booker who brought all the major blues artists into town. I would sneak into this club through the back door and there were all of the great players, so very early on I was being exposed to it." As a teenager, he would walk around Ottawa dressed like Charlie Musselwhite, the blues musician, wearing big shades and a long raincoat (the inspiration for his Elwood Blues character).

What I find most endearing about Aykroyd is his wide range of interests and the intensity with which he follows them: motorbikes, wine, music, politics ("I think Hillary would make an extremely capable president. She brings Bill along, she has knowledge and experience, and I see great leadership strength there"), law enforcement and criminology. His interest in the paranormal runs in the family - his grandparents held seances, and his younger brother Peter is a "psychic researcher". He says he has seen UFOs - some glowing discs travelling at high speed above his house at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. Another time, he says, he was outside in the street in New York, where he lives much of the time, on his mobile phone to Britney Spears (he played her father in a terrible film called Crossroads, and she had phoned to ask him to appear on Saturday Night Live with her) when he saw a black car across the street and a very tall man get out of the back. He looked back a split second later and it had vanished. The man, he says, had given him a "dirty look" that he took as "a warning". He didn't say if he thinks the warning was against working with Spears again.

Does he mind what others think about his beliefs? "Well, there was a poll in America which said 54% believe [in UFOs], so that's a majority - I'm with millions of people. How about the hundreds of thousands who have seen them? Or the ones who have been taken up in the ships?" He really thinks people have been abducted? "Oh, absolutely, many. I've spoken with very credible witnesses who have shown me their marks."

He points abstractly to his knees. "To those who don't believe and don't want to believe and think I'm crazy: good. Let the sceptics come and tear down the sighting. If I say I saw a black wedge go over my car, let them tell me that it was a cloud. I accept sceptics, you've got to have challenges. Please provide your explanations because that will help me to realise, along with my fellow researchers and ufologists, what is real and what isn't." That is sensible enough.

It is reassuring to know that Aykroyd doesn't appear to have lost his grip on reality. Or maybe he is right. Or maybe the whole thing is a joke. I don't think so, but suddenly I'm not sure what is real and what isn't. He walks away, dressed in a dark suit and sunglasses, an older, cuddlier Blues Brother. I can't see if he's laughing.
